If u remeber in HL1 when ur on Xen, u kill that massive Spider thing that keeps laying baby headcrabs. So in EP1 and even HL2 there shouldnt be any headcrabs, they should be extinct shouldnt they??

Who's to say that was the only one?

Valve also planned to hint to the fact the Combine were using a Gonarch sac fused with mechanical components for massive headcrab production. It didn't make it into the game, though.

Every headcrab grows into a Gonarch - it's just very few make it to that stage.

didn't someone send an email to marc laidlaw once asking whether poison/fast headcrabs were naturally occurring or combine augmentations?
what happened with that?

I bring it up because, if they were the latter, would they even be able to grow to gonarch size?

MASSIVE LOL.

You don't think... that there are loads of Gonarches... let alone headcrabs. They'd have been scattered all over Earth by now, if the portal storms continue.

I hope they include the teleporting from HL into Episode Two. It should make sense if it (portal storms) still continued.

What would fast Gonarches do?
They're fast enough already!
Would they sprint at you in a matter of seconds.

a poison gonarch, ick.

how is a gonarch formed? does the headcrab eventually mutate the host body into a gonarch, or does it evolve into a gonarch seperate of the host?

That would be so cool if they did release a gonarch into one of the eps, I would love to see a fast one. Though they would be impossible to kill lol, fast head zombies were hard enough to kill in numbers as it is, imagine if something happened to augment headcrabs into gonarchs a lot more quickly that would be so cool yet impossible to complete that game lol.

Fast Gonarch...hmm. It'd basically be an elephant covered in its own intestines running at you faster than a bullet train. It should even make all kinds of squishy sounds while at it.

Eww.

LOL Para yup your right basically it is a bullet train with entrails spread every where and lots of splodgey noises how did you guess lol.

I don't believe the crabs remain on the host body for too long. It's more of a survival thing I'm sure, and a means of food I guess. Darkside is writing up a pretty freakin huge thing on the evolution of the headcrab...be sure to look out for it.

You know I think the word gonarch would be a really good insult to someone who doesn't play the game they wouldn't know what the hell you were on about lol.

Don't headcrabs eventually fuse to the host body and become an entirely new entity? Like in OpFor/BS. I thought that was all a very cool idea apart from the mouth looked like two, sharp, vaginal lips. :|

There goes Gearbox forcing their retarded ideas on everyone YET AGAIN. :p

Hah. I even remember what they are called. Genomes.

The problem is, if you deny them, it makes a continuity error in your series. If you accept it... there is also a continuity error in the series in that no zombie goasts ever turned into any in Ravenholm or the Lowlife tunnels.

EDIT: I know a nice way we can remove them from the story without a continuity error. They need to be near Xen fauna. There. Problem solved. You encountered them after Black Mesa begins to get over-run by "bits" of Xen. As there is none of that in City 17, all is good.

Or you can just say that they were mutations due to something at Black Mesa. Like heavy radiation or toxic waste mutated them or something like that.

Mutation from man-made things doesn't happen that fast. :hmph:

Or they just didn't eat enough to grow that large.

Headcrabs mutate human hosts in a matter of minutes, though, given how quickly they appeared in HL1. Radiation/toxic waste/whatever could have a much quicker effect on them due to their already rapid mutation.

The reason I prefer an explanation like that is because it turns it into a fluke instead of something normal that would always happen under the right circumstances. Chances are, though, that we'll never see official word on it, so anyone's explanation is just as good.

That is one of the reasons that I think Valve has abandoned Gearbox's "canon".

I don't think I've seen any indication of Valve trying to add Gonomes to Half-Life 2 ever. They're not mentioned in Raising the Bar and they're not in the Beta. Valve even considered putting a Gonarch in Ravenholm, but they've never even mentioned Gonomes.

It would have been out of place. You really need a set up for something like Gonarch.

picture the raid you would need to kill a gonarch.....

Treat gearbox's work like a fanfic for an existing Harry Potter book. Just because I wrote a story where Harry dies, it doesn't change anything about the real Harry Potter universe. The author isn't then obligated to somehow bring him back to life or anything.

It would probably die before that stage, since it is not a 'natural' headcrab as it was a regular headcrab mutated by the combine

What does it eat?

Isn't it's mouth grown over by that sac?

Getting an urge to play some HL2 now. :|

That's speculation, though, as there's no substantial proof of the origins of fast/poison headcrabs. Gordon didn't encounter them until the Combine arrived, true, but that's just a correlation and not (yet) a cause. It's still very possible that they're just another naturally occuring species.

it's been established that the expansions are canon
despite the wishes of you gearbox haters :D
