No "Saving" or chapter titles

I have a fairly minor problem. I just got hl2. I'm just playing the regular single player. It works well, but when I quicksave, there is no text "Saving" across the screen and chapter titles aren't appearing when I go to a new level. When I played at a friend's house this text was there. Is there something wrong with my install or can I fix this?

Go into control and assign a key for "quick save"

I had this bug ages ago. I thought Valve had fixed this bug last summer. Anyway, the way I fixed it was a complete re-install of Steam. Everything else I tried didn't work.
