I think it would be a cool thread idea to list your favorite movies with a short description and a link to the Internet Movie Database. This is not meant to be a big long rant about a single movie, but instead a long listing of everyone's favorites. If you want to talk exclusively about one movie you should create a new thread. I just like the idea of one thread having a long list of the greatest flicks.

When commenting, try to add at least a couple movies (not just one) and give a short description and the genre. And link them up to the IMDB. And no discussion without making an addition, please.

---

Action

Last Action Hero: Action-packed movie starring Arnold as the.. star of a movie that somehow winds up in the real world.

The Matrix: Kung-fu meets Sci-fi in this action movie about a robot-dominated Earth and a fake reality. Hugh Weaving plays the best villain of any movie ever made.

Predator: Arnold stars as the leader of a military rescue team that gets hunted by an unseen enemy in South American jungles.

True Lies: Arnold again :)p) stars in my favorite pure action flick of all time as a spy who has lied to his wife about his profession for decades before the truth comes out.

Horror

Alien: Probably the best sci-fi horror flick ever made, the crew of a remote spacecraft fight a strange alien that somehow climbs aboard...

Aliens: A very different style than the original, but a worthy sequal none the less- the survivor from the first movie awakens from a 70 year long hibernation to find that the planet in which the alien originated from is now being colonized by humans. A group of marines are dispatched as a rescue crew.

The Lost Boys: The story of a family that moves to a city known for its high crime rates. Why? Vampires. The movie's best quality is its rockin' 80s soundtrack.

Plan 9 From Outer Space: Undoubtedly the worst film of all time, Plan 9 was directed by Ed Wood and tells the story of an alien race's 9th plan to take over Earth- to raise an army of the undead. A definate must-see, if you are into cult flicks.

The Thing: Definately my favorite horror film, John Carpenter's The Thing remakes a 1950s story of a shapeshifting alien that can take the form of humans and attacks an Antartic research crew.

Comedy

The Big Lebowski: One of the strangest, yet most hilarious random comedys I've ever seen. Lebowski, an unemployed bum, gets involved in a huge mess of gangs, scandals, and porno directors all because two guys peed on his carpet...

Clifford: Probably a very unknown comedy to most; Martin Short plays a young troublemaker that destroys the life of a city planner. A childhood favorite of mine.

Life of Brian: Monty Python at its best as they tell the tale of Brian- and how he was named a messiah around the same time Jesus was. WARNING! Not for the religious that cannot take things with a grain of salt.

Raising Arizona: Bizarre comedy starring Nicolas Cage, a common theif who steals a baby from a woman who has an octoplut because his wife cannot conceive.

Drama

Adaptation: Nicolas Cage plays an emotionally distressed screenwriter that is currently writing a movie about flowers, but this unknowingly gets him into a lot more.

Donnie Darko: A psychological drama about a disturbed teenager that discovers some rather strange things...

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: My absolute favorite movie of all time due to its parallels with my own life. Jim Carrey, after breaking up with his girlfriend Kate Winslet, decides to have an operation to remove her from his memory. However, during the process he discovers that he still loves her, and tries to call it off.

Fight Club: Must-see flick about an insomniac and his friend that create a club in which men fight... but eventually it becomes something more.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: Jack Nicolson feigns insanity to get out of a work prison, and discovers the harsh conditions of the asylum.

Reservoir Dogs: Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Resevoir Dogs is a gangster film dealing with a diamond heist gone wrong. Some of the best acting and dialogue of any film I've ever seen.

Sci-Fi: Star Wars, either Episode IV, V, or VI.
Edit: I saw the Last Action Hero last saturday and I thought it was pretty funny.
Where's Saving Private Ryan?

Videodrome: Horror.

I'm a big Cronenberg fan, and I knew I was going to love this movie before I even saw it. It's the story of a sleazy cable tv operator (played by James Woods) who uncovers an apparent live snuff broadcast going out encrypted over the airwaves, and his obsession with the show itself and its creators.

It was written as well as directed by Cronenberg, and stands as an insightful and chilling exploration of obsession and immersion and subversion with and by mass-media.

Brilliant dialogue (including some very memorable quotes you may have heard sampled here and there), incredible effects by Rick Baker, which have barely dated. It's movies like Videodrome that demonstrate how far computer imagery still has to go before it can construct special effects as vivid and believable as what the old techniques were capable of.

It also has my all-time favourite movie ending. I don't think I'll ever see a finale as poignant, thought-provoking and involving as the closing of Videodrome. It practically ends up right in your lap. Incredible stuff.

"Long live the New Flesh."

Apocapyse Now
Pulp Fiction
Spaceballs
Monty Python and the Search for Holy Grail
Indiana Jones (all 3)
Requiem for a Dream

Im too lazy to write descriptions :p

Action

Kill Bill Volume 1: A female assassin attacked on her wedding day by her group leader, Bill, wakes up from a coma and seeks revenge.

The Matrix: A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against the controllers of it.

The Matrix Reloaded: Neo and the rebel leaders estimate that they have 72 hours until 250,000 probes discover Zion and destroy it and its inhabitants. During this, Neo must decide how he can save Trinity from a dark fate in his dreams. My favorite of the trilogy.

The Matrix Revolutions: The human city of Zion defends itself against the massive invasion of the machines as Neo fights to end the war at another front while also opposing the rogue Agent Smith.

Predator: A team of commandos, on a mission in a Central American jungle, find themselves hunted by an extra-terrestrial warrior.

Spider-Man: When bitten by a genetically modified spider, a nerdy high school student gains spider-like abilities which he must eventually use to fight evil as a superhero.

Spider-Man 2: Peter Parker is beset with numerous personal problems while Spider-Man confronts the brilliant Dr. Otto Octavius, who has been transformed into "Doctor Octopus" (aka, "Doc Ock"), a multi-tentacled menace.

The Animatrix: The Animatrix is a collection of several animated short films, detailing the backstory of the "Matrix" universe, and the original war between man and machines which led to the creation of the Matrix. My favorite anime/CGI movie.

The Terminator: A human-looking, apparently unstoppable cyborg is sent from the future to kill Sarah Connor; Kyle Reese is sent to stop it.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day: A shape-shifting cyborg is sent back from the future to kill John Connor before he can grow up to lead the resistance; a protector is sent, too. The best of the three.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines: John Connor is now in his 20's, and a female terminator, called T-X or Terminatrix, is after him. Another T-101 is sent back through time to protect John once again on the verge of the rise of the machines.

Horror

28 Days Later: Four weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.

Dawn of the Dead (1978): Following an epidemic of zombies two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall. Regarded the best zombie film to date, it is truly my favorite zombie movie of all-time.

Dawn of the Dead (2004): The survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing the flesh-hungry undead, take refuge in a mega shopping mall.

Day of the Dead: A small group of military officers and scientists dwell in an underground bunker as the world above is overrun by zombies.

Final Destination: After having a vision of his friends crashing in a plane, he tells them not to get on only later his friends start getting killed one by one.

Final Destination 2: When Kimberly has a violent premonition of a highway pileup she blocks the freeway, keeping a few others meant to die, safe...Or are they? The survivors mysteriously start dying and it's up to Kimberly to stop it before she's next.

Jaws: A police chief, a scientist, and a grizzled sailor set out to kill a shark that is menacing the seaside community of Amity Island.

Jaws 2: The small island resort town of Amity is trying to bounce back from the financial problems it had after...

Night of the Living Dead (1968): A group of people hide from bloodthirsty zombies in a farmhouse.

Night of the Living Dead (1990): In this remake of the original classic film, a group of people are trapped inside a farmhouse as legions...

Resident Evil: A special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident. Don't even bother seeing the sequel.

The Exorcist: A 12 year old girl is possessed by the devil and her only hope is an exorcism. The scariest movie of all-time.

The Shining: A young boy and his parents become caretakers of an isolated and haunted hotel over the winter.

The Thing: Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills.

Comedy

Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A story of a group of California teenagers who enjoy malls, sex and rock n' roll.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure: The weirdo man-child goes on a cross-country trek in pursuit of his stolen beloved bike.

Not Another Teen Movie: A sendup of all the teen movies that have accumulated in the past two decades.

Scary Movie: A year after disposing the body of a man they accidently killed, a group of dumb teenagers are stalked by a bumbling serial killer.

Scary Movie 2: Four teens are tricked by their professor into visiting a haunted house for a school project. Don't bother seeing the third.

Drama

A Clockwork Orange: The adventures of a young man who loved a bit of the old ultra-violence, went to jail, was brainwashed and came out cured, or was he? The weirdest movie I have ever seen.

Artificial Intelligence: AI: A highly advanced robotic boy longs to become "real" so that he can regain the love of his human mother.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: A group of Earth children help a stranded alien botanist return home.

Goodfellas: Henry Hill and his friends work their way up through the mob hierarchy. The best mob movie ever.

Kill Bill Volume 2: The Bride continues her vengeance quest against her ex-boss, Bill, and his associates.

Minority Report: In the future, criminals are caught before the crimes they commit, but one of the officers in the special unit is accused of one such crime and sets out to prove his innocence.

Open Water: Based on the true story of two scuba divers accidentally stranded in shark infested waters after their tour boat has left.

Phone Booth: Stuart Shepard finds himself trapped in a phone booth, pinned down by an extortionist's sniper rifle.

Pulp Fiction: The stories of two mob hit men, a boxer and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.

Reservoir Dogs: They were perfect strangers, assembled to pull off the perfect crime. Their simple robbery explodes into a bloody ambush, and the ruthless killers realise one of them is a police informer. But which one?

Scarface (1983): In 1980 Miami, a determined Cuban immigrant takes over a drug empire while succumbing to greed. My favorite movie of all-time.

The Day After Tomorrow: A climatologist tries to figure out a way to save the world from abrupt global warming. He must get to his young son in New York, which is being taken over by a new ice age.

The Godfather: The epic saga of how a younger son rises to take over the family business, his father's paternalistic, but violent and illegal empire. The best of the trilogy.

The Godfather: Part II: The early life & career of Vito Corleone is portrayed while his son expands and tightens his grip on his crime syndicate in the 1950's.

The Godfather: Part III: A Mafia godfather attempts to legitimize his business dealings.

The Passion of the Christ: A film detailing the final hours and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The Shawshank Redemption: The life of Andy Dufresne changes when he is convicted and jailed for the murder of his wife.

Titanic: Fictional romantic tale of a rich girl and poor boy who meet on the ill-fated voyage of the 'unsinkable' ship. The highest grossing film of all-time.

I officially have the worst taste in movies ever?? It's my taste in movies, not yours. Everyone likes and hates certain movies in their own way, you don't have to agree with me and I don't have to agree you. It's quite an opinioned question when someone asks: "What are your favorite movies?"

With that said, I also forgot another great one...8 Mile.
