I'm sure this has been posted before, but I did a search and it turned up nothing (of course it's a three year old interview) Anyway, found this old LaidLaw interview which basically tells how he got into the industry and the story and narrative of the HL series--also towards the end he makes a reference to a certain writer of an extremely popular fanfic, so all in all, it was a good read.
