For some reason, I've had a desire to listen to old music. I'm talking like anything from classical up to the 1950s. But I don't really know of any artists or composers besides the painfully obvious ones like Mozart and Beethoven. What are some of the must-know songs and artists from the time before most of us were even alive?

Inspiration for Pink Floyd's 'The Wall', it seems: Vera Lynn -

I know you were suggesting classical, but I just wanted to add that anyway. So, um:

J.S. Bach
Albinoni
Barber
Bizet
Debussy
Delibes
Dvorak
Elgar
Handel

Khachaturian
Masagni
Orff
Parry
Prokofiev
Puccini
Rachmaninov
Satie
Tchaikovsky
Verdi
Vivaldi

I highlighted some of the better known ones

Say what you like about the Bioshock series, but they have some fabulous period music in there. I basically owe my degree to the calming voices of the Ink Spots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgszyQH9VWE
And Bioshock 2 did the inevitable and brought the Mills Brothers into the party

The first game also had the masterstroke of Django Reinhardt's jazz guitar

But seriously, take a look at the gems on the soundtrack lists. Fallout 3 had some decent tunes too, but nothing like enough of them. Also, it seemed a lot like someone assembled the tracklist with a bunch of keywords related to the most obvious themes in the game...

And yes it's sad that I've largely experienced all this music through games at all. Or absolutely amazing.

edit: Oh wait, I can be even more low brow:

"Old music", isn't exactly very specific

That's basically the point. I'm not looking for anything specific, just looking to hear some music I may never had heard. Most of the music in this thread has been pretty recent though (at least, relative to the phrase "old music." But I'm enjoying a lot of this music, still havent gotten though all of the posts, but this is some good stuff. I particularly liked Shaker's classical music, as well as Dear Vera, since now Floyd's song has a lot more meaning to me haha. Still gotta go through the rest of Virus' post and look up those composers.

Also, I'll post this again, since I post it at every chance I get anyways. Its lyrics are from letters written from a father living in Ireland to his son living in the USA in the late 1800s.

Yeah, I just burst out singing "Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn? Remember how she said that someday that we would meet again..." one day while I was at my computer and decided to do a search for Vera Lynn.

I guess I'm about 30 years late on figuring out that it was a real person, but yeah. Nice song.
