I've just cancelled my subscription to eMusic. The idea was, pay 8 quid a month and get 40 tracks that are yours to keep - really great, but their library wasn't so good. It had plenty of the older jazz, but didn't have a lot of the more modern material I'm interested in.

So! I need a new service, and I've no idea where to start - I've had a look at napster, but the idea of all the songs I've downloaded being switched off after my subscription really doesn't appeal.

I've had a look at itunes etc., but I'm wondering if there's anything similar to eMusic out there, with a bigger, or more modern, library - 40 downloads for eight quid was really good value.

Limewire has a huge selection and is cheap.. very cheap.

I've used eMusic in the past to get ahold of some more obscure stuff, but thats more what they're there for. If you like anything mildly popular then you'll probably need to have a main source elsewhere.

I still use iTunes. I don't have an iPod, but its pay-as-you-go (so I actually OWN my tracks, not rent them), very easy to use, and their selection is second to none. Burn up whatever I bought for my car, then do a quick rip from that CD while I'm at it and I've got completely unprotected MP3 files at my disposal.

So you buy 128kbps songs, then rip them again?? Don't want to come off as a prick but it's not a good idea to do that. You'll end up with very bad quality files but hey, if you can't tell the difference or don't play them on high-end stereo systems, then don't worry about what I said.

Personally I say screw online stores, you can find really cheap music at second hands stores.
