Wouldn't be cool if ther came out with opposing forces 2 where its the same kind of story intertwing with u being a combine trying to stop gordon. and then come out with blue shift 2?

I can't stand it, I never want there to be a Op4:2...

Well at least the way you describe it

It was about time we started dividing the forum goers into anti-shephards, pro-shephards and anti-goatsherds again...

It's beginning to look unlikely, but who knows what Valve will do after Aftermath. I think a single expansion would be unfitting for a game of Half-Life2's critical calibre. Valve has expressed a wish to go Episodic, focusing on certain aspects (I think Gabe said doing something focused on vehicles?). We'll see, but I feel that it's something that would only happen if someone like Gearbox was brought in to work on it. Which seems unlikely; Besides, as Valve say, they're heavily profecient with their tech, so they're the best ones to make a Half-Life 2 expansion...

Just because Shepard was against Gordon in Opposing force (only because he was following orders) doesn't mean he has to join the Combine. But hey, at least you didn't actually mention Shepard...

There is no need for an Opposing force 2. What would be the point? Why?
Why Blue shift 2? No.

I'd dig a missing week Blue Shift expansion... Needn't call it "Blue Shift" mind you, just have Barney as the main. Or rather, the excuse for having an expansion in that week.

how about shepard falling down from the sky, just to see gordon having a beer with barney? that way we could call it "opposing gravity force with shepard coming back trying to kill gordon"... sarcasm/

but really, why was the name blue shift, chosen for HL1's exp.?
op4: 2 woudn't be that bad, exept that it needs a lot of story work, and a new name...

Because Blue Shift is a scientific term and also the name of Barney's security shift. Gearbox had this thing with putting physics terms into expansion names. Valve doesn't seem bothered though.

But then, that'd be dodgy because we know Barney speaks, yet he won't communicate when playing as him? Or, you could play as another character, and simply have Barney side by side throughout - like Alyx in Aftermath.
An episode within that week would be pretty awesome. Some more citizen violence towards Combine please, the street war was pretty tame. Come on people, you've been oppressed for years!

good answer, so it's got nothing to do with HL2's atm. right?

Exactly. I want to see the pick up the can cop getting his can kicked by an angry mob... but don't forget that it's not just oppression... but repression too! I want to see horny jock resistance fighters trying to hit on armoured gals and recieving a stolen riot baton to the head for their troubles. I want to see Doctor Kliener with a shy, nerdy lady friend! I want to see Doctor Judith Mossman croon "The Power of Love" over the City-Wide announcement system, whilst resistance fighters put down their weapons and embrace their transhuman-combine foes, who were once friends, family and lovers before that fated day all those years ago!

Cos' I'm your laaaadddyyy!!!!

And you are my maaaannnn
Just thought i'd get one more off-the-wall post before the new-year begins (and yes, I am aware that it's new year's eve tommorow, so I have 24 hours of not entirely serious posting left to go!)

Edit:

Unless (by a hideously contrived coincidence) Barney's metro-cop shifts happen to be designated "Blue" as well :P

I think an expansion where you are Barney or you are almost constantly with him is in the cards.

a 7-hour-war exp would be better.
I disagree actually... I think Valve skipped it for a reason, and that we shouldn't now jump back in time. I mean, the minute the Half-Life series heads back in time, the speculations forums will become full with "I want to go back to Black Mesa!" threads. Or worse; it'd be seen as some kind of validation for the "G-Man is Gordon Freeman from the future come back to the past to change the future!" arguement.

And then the entire universe implodes, either because Freeman stops himself from putting the sample in the antimass-spectrometer, or because of the sheer weight of idiotic ideas contained within the halflife2.net speculation forums.

Edit: of course, the mod teams will do the 7 hours war, as they'll do their own version of Opposing Force 2. But I just don't think Valve should touch it, aside from actually explaining or showing it to Freeman.

The thing about the 7 hours war is that, essentially, the combine appear and kick the crap out of an entire planet for only 7 hours until Breen 'negotiates' the earth saying don't kill us we'll be your willing slaves and soldiers.

Which could make for a poor game. Losing is all very well and good, but you need to feel like you're not completely defeated. Well, unless you are Tom Cruise, trying to drive your irritating kids to a hide-out in the country, all the time praying for a Deus Ex machina to come along and kill all the aliens. AND a dodgy Hollywood ending in which, actually, your Son that was supposedly firebombed to oblivion is alive and well.

Ok, so not that exactly. But as an "escape the invasion" story along the lines of the original incident, a 7 hour war story could work well. Not withstanding that it's basically a cookie-cutter FPS storyline used in many 90s FPS games...

Very similar to Aftermath however, as you would be fleeing whatever city you live in and going into the wastelands inhabited by antlions and other xen creatures to escape the attacks which will directed at the population centres.

Opposing Force 2: Drop Sheperd off on some unknown part of the
universe for "safekeeping". While there he has to carry out a series
of mission both to survive, and to possibly provide a vehicle for a better
explanation of some of the events surrounding the Black Mesa mission.

Blue Shift 2: A flashback storyline where you play as Barney while you
play thru such scenarios as:
Surviving getting away from Black Mesa before the bomb goes off;
Surviving the 7 hours war; helping Eli and Alyx escape the resulting chaos;
finding Dr. Kleiner, not killing Lamarr; infiltrating the CP,
finding and or retrieving an HEV suit and crowbar for Dr. Kleiner, not killing Lamarr;
helping to set up the underground resistance; moving the whole operation to City 17
right under Breens nose; helping find parts for the new Teleportation machine for
Dr. Kleiner, not killing Lamarr...

I'm sure you could weave something awesome into the 7-hours.

i think those are great ideas,and i hope they make a game that has exactly that kind of stuff, but i hope u remember how many time opposing forces and blue shift's story lines ran through the same area that was in half life 1. that would be cool.

I'm surprised nobody has done a mod of the 7-hour war.
I'm not. We're only 1 year and a month from the original release of HL2. Very little has been modded, especially on the Single Player side of things.

There have been, and probably still are 7 Hour War mods in development. "The last seven hours" for instance.
