Our mutual fiend

I don't know if anyone have noticed this, but the level is called Our Mutual Fiend, but when Eli talks to gordon he mentions "Our mutual friend" - any thoughts on this matter?

The called it '... fiend' because he's not a good guy and Eli doesn't actually mean he's a friend. He's just using a phrase that you'll understand (well, should have). That way they get to reference he who shall not be named without naming him.

He wants to have a chat with Gordy, presumably to let us know whatever he does about the GMan. He says that between him and Gordon we might have a chance to...

Yeah the ending was sort of odd -- they randomly flew in and killed him, then flew out.

Hopefully they didn't suck a brain and magically learn stuff that way, though I do wonder why they attacked.


Then again, they might have intended to kill all of us before dog came -- sort of a "Want it done right?" idea.

They'd been probing the defences for a while by that point, seeing not only three unprotected humans but three of the most wanted in the resistance makes for a juicy target.

I thought the same thing, actually.

First we find out in Half-Life 2 that Gordon is under "contact" for a group (the resistance or something like that) through the G-Man. Breen knew something of this, but then he's turned into an adviser or whatever.

Then we find out in Episode Two that Eli made a deal with the G-Man to get Alyx back to him, or something like that.

So now the only person that knows anything about the G-Man is... the G-Man.

Eli's referring to him as a "friend" was heavily ironic, considering that he's responsible for the entire mess that Earth is in not to mention Azian's death (and countless others) I would say that "fiend" sums him up pretty well. Why did he do it? The Resonance Cascade I mean. To get his hands on one man (Gordan?) Good grief!

I thought that "Our Mutual Friend" is a Dickens reference after the book of the same name... the Vortigaunt in the lab coat I think it is, Magnusson calls him "Uriah" - Uriah Heep was a character in Dickens' "David Copperfield". I wonder if theres a significance? I guess someone at Valve is a fan.

2. Eli was given the crystal in Half Life (1) just before the resonance cascade. You can see him talking to G-Man through the glass of one of the offices. It was then that he must have been told "Prepare for unforeseen circumstances." G-Man is simply using Alyx for his own ends... and we don't know what they are yet. But she's alive for a reason and G-Man wants it that way. As Eli said "Unforeseen... circumstances" must refer to the Borealis. There must be some similar type of device to that which caused the Black Mesa incident and G-Man wants it to be used... so it has to be destroyed. G-Man can't be allowed to succeed again. Humans can't handle portal technology. It causes too many problems it has to be destroyed. It has to end here. The last thing Earth needs is another Black Mesa incident. At least thats how I understood it.

As I recall it he just mentions that it is Gman that brings the crystal. And I belive that he whispers "unforseen concequences" in Eli's ear, just before the crystal is brought into the test chamber. Eli also wants to stop the expiriment. But does'nt.

Here's a thought.

You apparently need a Xen Crystal to get to Xen.

What if...

G-Man has been doing other things on Earth, for some reason. Hears of this Black Mesa place and their teleportation experiments. Gets a Crystal from Xen (he can get there himself), and gets them interested. He pretends to only be a deliveryman. Sees Gordon, wants Gordon, brings them a crystal and asks a "price". Takes Gordon as payment.
