What is the best video card avaliable that will run on a PCI normal slot?
Please dont just tell me to get a new rig or motherboard.
Because I'm currently using a GeForce FX5200 ;(

That's not far off the best. You can get an FX5700 or an ATI 9200 I think.

If you could find a card better then that in PCI, I'd be shocked.

But really, if you have a PC without an AGP/PCI-Express slot in it... well, you said not to say it, so I won't, but you really should. ;)

FX5700? Where?
SSuxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

You can get an AGP mobo for extremely cheap. If you're considering upgrading your graphics card, you should probably invest in a new mobo first.

Im on a dimension 2350 (yes, it's dell........) and *apparently* (according to the "Technical Support" from India) it's impossible to upgrade the motherboard because the parts are specially made or the case is wrong or whatever.
I would like to be disproved though.

It's a decent card actually that you have, but a question... how come that your computer doesn't have an AGP slot, yet would be able to run HL2?

You, my friend, are wrong in so many ways that you ought to be lynched.
The 5200 is the bane of any system. It rallies to destroy your gaming experience. However, it is marginally better than the Intel !EXTREME! integrated graphics chip that i had before....... yeah, "extreme" indeed. But it manages ~30fps on the VST.

I can't see the reasons for hatred towards 5200 that is sometimes exhibited. It's a card that knows pixel shading and other good technologies and can manage what it does very well. Not as good as 5700, of course, but that's obvious. 5700 does 1.9 Gpixels/sec vs. 1.3 of 5200. That is, of course, due to the faster engine clock. Both are 128 bit, though, wiht 4 render pipelines.

the 5200 can produce MANY excellelant effects, but painfully slow somtimes. So you may want to compensate for that w/ MORE ram, it helps me...

hl2 shuld run in dx8 w/ the 5200 well...and ne other pci cards arent worth the $$ for such a small improvement...AT ALL!

tip if you got a amd on socket a like duron or atlhon
or intel like celeron on 478 or p4 on 478
+ ddr memory 266 for example
i suggest to get a good but not to expansive mainboard + a midrange gpu
like 9600 or 9800
i dont think pci will be enough atleast in my opininion
and its defiantly not future proof

You have the top of the line PCI graphics card. There is nothing better.

You are a perfect reason why you should never buy Dell. You want to upgrade something, but can't. Dell would rather have you buy a new computer than upgrade.

Unless you are going to buy a new computer, stick with your FX5200.

Also, we have a hardware section in this forum with people who know what they are talking about. ;)

[Edit]: Apparently they started selling a FX5700 PCI card. I haven't seen any benchmarks on it, so I don't know.
[Edit2]: Looks like the performance of a FX5700 PCI card will be below a ATI 9600 video card. The performance of this card is highly dependent on individual games on how much bandwith between the GPU and CPU (because of the limits of the PCI bus).
