Anyone know if Source will allow persistent data for multiplayer?

For example, a RPG mod that allows characters to level-up, build up an inventory, etc.

Obviously this would be per server (unless several servers used the same database) but I think it would be interesting nonetheless.

You mean server side saving.. and I doubt it.. possibly.

wouldn't that be up to the server, not the game engine? you can do it in counter-strike now, i don't know why it wouldn't be possible

I know with Adminmod, you can specify a mysql database to read/write to for user access.

I just hope this type of feature was extended a bit for some interesting MODs.

There are mods like this for HL already, so yes it will be possible. But it will need alot of work and resources.

Yes it is possible, and with HL2's moddable crap, it should be easier than before to do so, maybe with even more abilites now.

I emailed Mr. Newell a while back about it, but he didn't reply.

Or..at all. If you don't get a reply in 2 days, forget it and send another one.

of course it will, you can do it with the current half-life (ala wc3 mod for counterstrike)

server side saving is possibl e in Hl1..Desert Crisis mod was thinking about doing it when it was being developed, I havent followed the mod at all in over a year so i dunno what happend with it and why it got scrapped.

But basically all servers for that mod would report to master servers that held all information..

it is possible in Hl1, noone has done it yet though

No valved ray, didn't you read what shockwave said.
They report to a masterserver.

There's a mod that does this, I don't remember its name though.

I think this will be a lot easier to do in Half-life 2 than HL1.

The AMX plugin for HL allows a WC3mod server for CS to save a player's XP. No doubt somone will make something similar for HL2.

HL2 is completely flexible for mods, as they've said Source has the flexibility to create a seperate program for every pixel on a model to do something different so I don't see why not.
