Pitbulls

After a handful of incidents involving pitbulls, some of the politicians here in Toronto want to ban pitbulls.

these incidents range from pitbulls attacking very young kids (i think a girl got killed because of this) to other weaker dogs being attacked.

now i do not have any pets (and probably won't be getting one anytime soon) so this does not affect me in the same way as it does others... but i am interested in ur opinion of pitbulls in general.

around here the reputation isn't great (obviously) after following some nasty incidents but what is the reputation of this breed of dogs in ur area? i am curious.

Allow current owners to keep theirs while not allowing others to buy/get them.

Seems like a good solution.

Would you then, also charge up a Kamehameha wave with stewing rage and anger whilst afterward, blasting your foe (the pitbull) accross the continent of North America?

You underestimate the dog. Because of that, your more likely to be a victim of an attack, in the event that kind of dog is in your presence.

Its not so much dogs sense fear, its just their more accute to visual and sonic changes in a person's chemicals. Wether visual or not, dogs can sense an irradic change in human behavior.

This ranges from typical guilt, happiness, sadness, and yes, even wanting to run or become aggressive on the persons own will. Dogs will respond to those.

In my opinion, banning a living creature is incorrect. But if its instituted, banning the people misusing the animal should be placed into effect.

Well, beyond the scope of them being house-pets, their is a reason why Pitbulls are so vicious in nature. The males and females preferabley, are very territorial, and are also, very aggressive because of their natural traits to be social and sexually driven beyond the scope of normal dogs.

People often use Pitbulls to "guard their yards". Lets address that: I think this institutes part of that violent string of behavior in these animals--mainly, due to their recognition of being nothing more then killing machines. Many pitbulls are used for Dog-Fights, because their jaws can lock.

Lots of dog fights. People obviously like watching animals being slayed--I cant wait for the day when I conquer the world and force those same idiots to die for my betting pleasure.

Dude, i love dogs, and i would never EVER attack one. if it came after me, i would do everything in my power to get away from it before fighting it. because i know a 30 pound dog can kill a man. and i'm a pussy. so there. besides, da puppies are sho cute, yesh dey are!

I saw a pitbull almost attack one of my neighbours. She had to jump her fence on her front patio to get away. And the owner had the balls to say "oh he just wanted to play with you"... man, I saw that dog, and the speed at which he was charging her. That was not fun to watch, let alone imagine to face head on. So personally, unless you live on a fenced in farm, theres no need for pitbulls in the city. imo

Out here in New Zealand there was an incident not too long ago where a dog brutally attacked a young girl. It was trying to attack another dog and the girl got in it way. The owners of the dog were taken to court as they had obviously trained the dog to be a killer, I'm not sure what happened with that but the girl's parents are lobbying for a change of laws in dog ownership. I think this is the best way to deal with it, while the dogs are more prone to violence, the real problem lies with the owners who encourage it. I've known a few families who keep pitbulls and rotweilers as pets and they're very pleasant animals. At the same time there are a few gangs operating around here who use them as 'protection', which I think is pretty despicable.

Edit - Oh, also I'm not really sure about specific laws, but I think breeding is controlled with a few species of dogs here.

Edit2 - Oh, ALSO I was almost attacked by a dog before, I think it was either a pitbull or rotweiler. It approached me and growled and stuff, but I backed off slowly and it eventually lost interest (even though I was clearly on the verge of pissing myself

).

wow this is gotta be a first ..I agree with 90% of what you've said, although the lock jaw thing is a myth. Pitbulls have the exact same jaw structure is every other breed

the problem with banning an animal is enforcing the ban ...strays and unwanted litters will have to be put down to adhere to the ban.

You should'nt be aloud to "ban" an animal, but on the other hand pitbulls are very violent, mostly as there stupid owners teach them to be, there would be no issue if the owners treated them right, but mostly every pitbull is owned by a teenage or druggy, or people who do dogfights.

Yeah, but have ever seen any othe dog hang ten feet in the air from a tree branch and wiggle like a rabid shark??

I grew up with a pitbull, my best friend had one. The are so good with children and playfull.

Its so sad how pitbulls are attacked when 99% of the problem is because of their owner.

I think that at least the gov should do is run background checks or whatever they could do to see if that family is suitable for a pitbull.

Despite what anyone says they are more vicious than other dogs and can easily kill - good riddence imho.

It's true that a pit doesn't have locking jaws but when they bit they tend to grip tight and don't let go.

the problem with that is, it gets complicated with finding out which dogs are violent and which aren't.
with a ban on pitbulls, the government can rely on public help (i am talking about Toronto specifically here).

its easy to say not to ban pitbulls when its not ur 7 year old son or daughter who got torn apart... pple need to see whats happened here to the communities that live in areas with pitbulls.. its a very scary proposition.

I say just train them. i know pitbulls arent equal to humans but thats like saying lock up all the black people because they do to much crime or dont make anymore white people because theyre to giddy.. I dont know but I dont think its right. i think if yuo own a pitbull you should just be aware of the consequences
