So just the other day I downloaded the BMS teaser trailer and attempted to play it. Unfortunately, just as Windows Media Player started up, the screen went black and my whole damn computer rebooted. After toying around with differents versions of WMP with no success I downloaded VLC... yet it too does the same thing when trying to open vidoes (I'm assuming it's Windows Media Audio/Video files that just don't want to work). I should mention that playing videos did work in the past ;)

Any suggestions?

Graphics card, drivers, virus. Those are where I'd start looking.

Do other videos that had worked still work? Or is it just with that file? Perhaps a codec issue.

Good, call - most video problems ARE codec related, yet not many people know what a codec IS. Having said that, I've never heard of a codec problem actually causing a re-boot. That's more of a Starforce trick. Either way, I guess it's something to add to the list.

Well, I guess it's either a driver issue or a codec issue due to the fact that the virus scan came up with nothing. Still, wouldn't VLC still run it even if it was a codec issue? (I always thought it could run anything)

EDIT: Nah, pretty much all videos that previously worked have decided to screw up.

Ok, so you DON'T know anything about codecs. The CODEC is what plays the video, the PLAYER only shows it to you (as long as it can interact with the codec correctly. Some players cannot use some codecs). It's a bit like having a car. Sure, the CAR drives around, but the GAS is what makes it go. No gas = no go. Car that has wrong gas / can't correctly use the gas in it = no go. Update your codecs. Google the free k-lite codec packs.

Usually if that happens for me it's a corrupt codec. :(

Just reinstall klite codec pack and call it good.

Alright, I reinstalled my ATI drivers again (What a ****ing tedious process), seems to have fixed it. Thanks for all the help though :)
