Portal not working.

I just finished downloading Portal. When the game starts, I can't get past the main screen, it lags so much. it will take about two minutes to open up the options screen, and sound is staggering the whole time. Do you guys know what's wrong? I've tried restarting Steam/my computer, and that's about as far as my knowledge will take me.

Try putting in the launch options -dxlevel 80 then lower the graphics right down to the lowest they can possibly go.

Do you have the latest directx installed for your OS?
Do you have you graphics card drivers up to date?
Have you tried lowering to settings to see if it makes a difference?

Try validating your Portal files, right click the game, properties, then look for a button which says 'validate integrity of game cache'.

Updated drivers, validated files, and it was still the same. Then I noticed it said "Connection Problem" in the top right, unplugged my net cable, and it was instantly running perfect. Then it seems I can reconnect the cable. Pretty strange, but I've been playing it for a while, and it's fantastic : D. It's the same case for Team Fortress 2. I dunno what's wrong, but I can easily just do that every time I get on. Tanks guyz. If more problems arise, I'll be back on here.

Yeah I had this problem too, it happened after I downloaded a fanmade map.

If you downloaded any delete them maybe?
