Ok I have preorder the CD from EB games. Can I still preload the game thru steam then just use the CD key I get from my EB purchase to activate the game?

Obviously in the future I would then reinstall if needed witht he disk to avoid download time, but I figure this may get me playing a few minutes/hours earlier :-P

wow, bump this section gets little action unlike the cs:source area...anyone know the answer to above?

People are saying you can, but I personally doubt it. I don't think its been confirmed by Valve.

Why not? Once you enter a valid CD Key Steam thinks you own the game. Why wouldn't they let you play it if you've already paid and used up their bandwidth by downloading it? If they wanted it to be only for people that are going to buy it through Steam they would have required you to either preorder or actually purchase it.

'Little action' lol...even when theres 5 times more people viewing this section than the CS:S section. patience is a virtue...

A lesson that would be very valuable for some people out there.

Yes you can buy the game and use the CD-key to activate the one you preloaded.

Heck, you can do the same with Half-Life.

what about the collector edition ?
i remember valve saying that each CE (boxed and steam) will have something the other doesn't, to make up for the things that the steam version can not have (obviously physical goodies). if i use a box serial number to have the steam version, wouldn't it be unfair as vice versa is impossible ?
that would make me believe that serial numbers can't "cross" between hard and virtual copies.

OR unlocking a steam HL2 with a box serial number only gives you a regular SP+MP ?

*LOL*

Logical thinking right there. :stare:

IF you have a CD key no matter how you got it (legally of course, I mean like steam, retail, CE), you can download it as many times you want and from wherever, ie logging into your steam account at a friends house.

can you back this up, PRETTY PLEASE ?

Hey everyone,

New here.. thought id be polite first :)

As OCybrmano says of course you will be able to, i have the retail of half life and CZ. I have it installed on 2 boxes at home and on my work box and I havent used the "pristine" disks since I bought them. I download via steam and use the CD keys that come with the boxes.

Why would HL2 be any different?
