I never played Prey, so could someone please tell me how Portal is stealing Prey's ideas? (Please don't say something like "Portal is COMPLETELY original, and those Prey guys are morons," because that's not very informative, now is it?)

Prey has portals. That's about where the similarities end. So anyone who says that Portal is stealing Prey's ideas is, in fact, full of crap.

Well, Prey's portals function just like doors. They are static, except for some parts where you hit a switch to turn on a portal or a switch to move one from point A to point B. You can't make your own. There are no puzzles involving portals either, except for a really easy maze made more for cool factor than to make you think.

With Valve's recent announcement of Portal coming so close on the heels of the release of Prey, some have accused Valve of copying an innovative and trendy gameplay element, much like many developers rushed to include variants of Half-Life 2's own "gravity gun." However, Portal seems to have been in development for some time; at least since the hiring of Narbacular Drop's developers, thus before the release date of Prey was announced, but after the latest incarnation of Prey began development in late 2001-2002. To counter this criticism, it has been pointed out that althought Prey does feature portals, they are not under player control and are not as integral to the gameplay of Prey as they are to the gameplay of Portal.

I would say that PREY has some type of inspiration to p0rtal, but then i'de also say that HL was even more of an inspiration to PREY, if you read my post here http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=109486 there are way too many things that are just like the HL series. So if one copied the other.....then they each did it so i would say its even now haha. ide also like to add that i think from what we've seen in p0rtal that it just abuses what prey did with their portal idea.....no physics were utilized during any of the portal puzzles, if they were even called puzzles... though they are cool and add a huge part to multiprey they only require u to just walk through them in single player.

"I've heard the ideas it presents dismissed as ripping off Prey, and if there is a more ignorant statement to be made regarding these two games it has yet to be discovered. Prey's portals aren't user created. What's more, they're used in a completely different way: Prey is a first-person shooter, while Portal is clearly... something else. It's a puzzle game, or an adventure game, or a platformer. You tell me."
