Probably a physics question...

Do you know in Half-Life how you can jump off a 1000ft cliff, land in 3ft of water and... not die? I just want to know if you can get hurt by falling in shallow water from a high altitude, or maybe deep water from the impact? Curious because I haven't seen or read anything on it yet. Sorry if posted before, I didn't care to search due to lazyness... :cat:

Things like fall damage are way beyond any engine at the moment.

Perhaps the Unreal 3 engine will have it. Jumping into shallow water and taking damage is massivly hard to code.

Interesting question, never really thought about that in the old HL engine, if water is "swimming deep" a high fall should hurt/kill. Hope it does.

some1 fire up their e-mail to valve

i'm guessing it'll probably be the same as HL1... although if you jump off a 1000 feet cliff that water will probably tear the skin right off you when you hit it.

I don't know why, but people think that source is really beyond amazing, it's cool, yes, but not that great.

its such a rare situation where you have to jump off a cliff that high, i doubt hl2 has any such situations. but still it would simple to mod.

Your probably right, didn't think about how hard it could be to in game at this time.

I know it's going to be impressive, but don't want to underestimate it either.

are you being sarcastic? halflife1 already has fall damage, where the farther you fall the more damage you take. all they have to do is factor water into the equation, ie for every 1 unit of water, it takes off a small percentage of impact/velocity

Er, I'm pretty sure if he was asking if this is possible or been done, not stating Source does.

Not to sound like a programming noob, but why would this be so hard to program?

Remember the scene where Gordon uses his manipulator on the edge of a cliff, im quite sure for gameplay reasons, instead of him jumping off the cliff, and swimming to the over side of the map (by passing all the combine), that valve will make you die in the water on impact... But, they might just let those swimming aliens get you, of which i cant remember the name, I something :)

In CS:Source, you take no damage if you land in water, no matter how high you fall, as for HL2, that's unknown as far as I know.

It wouldn't be. I don't know what he's talking about.

EDIT: Theotherguy beat me too it.

I know in CSS you don't get hurt (at least in that one map ;)).
But remember in HL2 he has his Hev suit.

This is VERY possible. Not incredibly complex either. I'm not sure if Valve will include it or not though.

i think they have, im sure i read somewhere that they had to change some physics in css, one of which being not dying when you fall into shallow water - aztec.

yeah falling from a huge cliff into the water should result in a bigger than normal splash, instant death, and your ragdoll corpse floating to the top. all very possible in source engine. it would be very satisfying to startle someone im MP and see this happen eheh.

Its not. It was sarcasm. What hes asking for has been in games since you walked off a ledge in Doom 1.

Well, in Far Cry, if you fall from high enough, you could actually die from hitting the bottom of a river/lake, if you are going fast enough. And in HL2, if an object going an x amount of velocity hits you, you take damage, now since the player officially weighs 80kg and bouyancy comes into play with all physically rendered objects, the water would not slow down the player's fall. But that is of coarse a theory, although if FC can do it, why the hell can't HL2?

I think that in situations like the cliff in E3 footage the game will trigger a suicide in the middle of the fall, then maybe hitting the water. If not, then the screen will fade to black after falling death..
