Not really, its just a step up from the PS2. Only you don't have to buy a Linux Kit to make the console run Linux.

yeah, i wonder how much fun it will coding for the marvelous 'cell' architecture, unless they plan on emulating x86 or something, i imagine it will be hell.

Well, to get the most out of coding for the PS2 you need to use the Vector Unit. Which requires a nice healthy understanding of assembly. Also the version of Linux used on the PS2 is specifically coded for the PS2's processor. So any programs that are programed for x86 won't work.
 
This will be a seperate kit for this.

If Sony did this in their normal kits it would be suicide.
