Purchasing HL2 off Steam Question..

Quick question: after it goes gold and the rest is preloaded, will you be able to play it right then, or will they wait till it's on store shelves to unlock it? Also, will you be able to burn the downloaded version to a cd/dvd in case of a crash or you have to reformat, so you dont have to download it again.
