Yeah, I just got out of a rather game... and I've come to realize...

Why the **** am I playing this game when it runs so god damn poorly?
I can't aim worth a shit because of the stutters and whenever I pilot, I usually crash due to some ****ing video lag...

I don't even have a headset anymore... so being in a squad without voice chat would be pointless.

So yeah, If you have them... I'll be playing BF1942(Forgotten Hope mostly.) and BF:V.
Been fun playing with those few that I had a chance to play with.

Just thought I'd make a thread to let you all know.

Adjust settings, optimize computer, buy better PC. Then buy a mic.

Problem solved :D

Not that easy for a kid that works a minimum wage job. :|

Adjust / Optimize is free, mic's are dirt cheap nowadays ($10-20?). Buying PC, ok that's not quite feasible :p But list your specs so we can have a rough idea what you're working with here and if it's possible to improve your FPS.

Off the top of my head, I would suggest a program called EnditAll, it'll close down any program not necessary for windows (about 1-2 fps boost, possibly more) However, the program isn't offered for dl anymore, (at least not officially) since it was supposedly similar to another commercial product.

PM me for more info ...

Oh and if you could tell us what your average FPS is that would also help.

I've got it taken care of... I just need to buy the stuff.

I need a new card(FX5200 >.>) and a hell of alot more ram.

i think im going to start playing again. i have not touched BF2 for over a month now, and i think i need to start playing before i get rusty. im probably getting 2 gigs of RAM for my birthday, and possible a new processor (:D) just have to wait :\

1 Gig of Ram is necessary for medium textures, 2 gigs for "high" setting. It's ridiculous how badly optimized BF2 is, I mean the game doesn't look anywhere good enough to justify the requirements.

I've got a friend who has a FX 5200 and he's having a hard time playing it on his as well, so new card is definately your best bet.

I figure I'll get a Geforce 6600GT, they seem to be the cheapest "newer" cards out there...
But it won't happen for atleast another month.

Jeez, that's the exact same card my friend wants to get. :|

Regardless, it's a good choice :)

I've got a friend with a 3.0 ghz, 1 gig of ram, and a 9600XT and plays on overall quality medium.

I have problems doing that on my 2.8, 2 gig of ram, x800GTO D:

I'm in the same situation; it runs like crap on my computer & I have the settings all the way down as low as they'll go, except draw-distance at 80%. All setting optimized, fresh operating system, used different utilities like cra*-cleaner, all the latest drivers.

1 GB DDR
AMD XP 2000+ (1.67 GHZ)
ATI 9800 PRO (128 MB)
ASUS A7N8X-X
BF2 on a Defragged, nearly empty 260 GB harddrive.

Theoretically the system requirements are...

CPU: 1.7 GHz Intel (or equivalent)
512 MB dram
DirectxX 9 128mb video card. (Geforce FX 5700; ATI 8500 & up)

I suppose it could be the video-memory (128 MB), but I have textures, models, and everything else set as low as possible.

But it's so true - most of the time I die, it's because of shitty frame-rates. I see a guy, I turn to shoot; it overshoots (the cursor) and then I can finally aim at him and then the aim is all messed up. Or I'm in the jet & it lags 1/2 a sec & I crash into something (I can dodge missiles all day long - even in the slow helicopter - LAME). Trying to aim with the tank is sometimes impossible if you’re moving or just shot a shell. It’s not my lag, because I get 30-40 ping on most RANDOM servers.

EDIT: Plus BF2 is buggy as hell & the flight controls are shi* (I use a joystick & have mastered them, but still).

EDIT 2: from another thread....

I'm just getting back into BF2 now I bought a new copy, but erm - does the 1.12 patch ruin anyone elses performance? I tested it out I can run 1.0 fine at 1280x1024 at medium/high settings, after I install 1.12 I have to play low/medium and even then it stutters like hell.
I'm going to try reverting to 1.0 & testing it.

I think it looks worlds better than most games out there. When I'm in a chopper and just flying over the scenery, it's beautiful (maxed settings, btw). The trees, the grass, the buildings, the effects... everything. Whenever I stop playing for awhile (I stopped for about a month awhile back), I forget how awesome everything is. Then I come back and think, "Wow, what a game."

i play on low and am delighted with how it looks
besides gameplay>>>>>>>>>>>graphics

Don't get me wrong, the game looks fine as is, but considering the requirements you'd think the game would look 'next-gen'-ish. I mean compare this game to HL2, Call of Duty 2, and you'd see this game doesn't look all that special. The optimization is absolutely terrible, I've NEVER had a game where I was forced to tone-down my graphics because of ram. I can't play on High texture settings because I don't have 2 gigs, that's bullsh*t right there. All the stuttering issues people are having, the terrible FPS the GeForce 5xxx series are getting, etc.

Just look at ET:Quake Wars, the game looks infinitely better and much more scalable. The dev's said the game will run on Doom3 requirements, which are much lower than BF2. (link) To be honest, I have seen my friend's GeForce 4200 run Call of Duty 2 on all high settings and it runs great. Yet DICE / EA decided it's not strong enough to run BF2 (although more likely paid not to support... :|)? Again that's ridiculous ...

I've got an FX5500 and have to put everything on low with 75 draw distance. It is really bad but at times can get pretty difficult. I just did a bit of oc'ing and have a 4-5 FPS boost. Sure as hell would like something better, but for now I can deal.

Here's how I see it. When you're really close to the screen, focused on one thing, the game isn't that great. But when you step back a little bit, and gaze at everything that's going on, it's like "whoa, this game is freaking gorgeous". This is magnified if you're looing at a huge scene, ala Kubra Dam. However, I must say, the game does look like ass if your machine isn't at least pretty good :\

Just for reference, I have an Athlon 64 3400+, 2 gigs of RAM, and an X800 XT PE. The game runs quite well with all high, 100% view distance, and 2xAA.

My view of "freaking gorgeous" is Half Life 2: The Lost Coast. Now THAT was freaking gorgeous, there's no other game (360, PC, or otherwise) that is quite as immersive as that one level in terms of graphics.

Infact, I still view the Source engine as the benchmark of graphics, not only is the engine incredibly scalable, the games itself are drop-dead gorgeous that doesn't overdo itself. Ex. games like FEAR / Q4 / Doom3 have that crappy "plastic" shiny coating that makes everything look fake.

Oh and why just 2x AA? I'm running a 6800 and I have it on 4x AA no problem, and I'm pretty sure your X800 XT PE is more powerful than my card.

I tend to agree with you aim. With my card I can put all on high with no AA or AF and it looks awesome and runs great. It runs so well on many machines.

Alrighty, I'll be returning to the BF2 scene this coming weekend.
I neeeed my modern warfare fix... I still have yet to come up with a sufficient amount of green for any new hardware, but I don't care.

I've got a new headset so I can finally use voice comm again.
:D

Gotta agree that this game is so temperamental - my 6800 ultra, 2gb of 3200 ram and xp3200+ runs this at medium settings (high makes it too choppy to play), while a friend with an identical machine and a 9800xt can run it all on high with no problems @ 1280x1024 :|

this game runs pretty shitty for me as well at medium settings.
the thing is, instead of addressing some of the issues, EA is more interested in releasing bonus map packs for a fee and other expansion packs too.

had they done something about the main game, perhaps people wouldn't be complaining as much about the expansions and bonus maps being released so soon.

You two tried updating / swapping 3rd party Drivers? A 6800 Ult + 2gigs of ram is definately capable of running this game on max ...

I have a 6800 stock + 1 gig of ram and I can run everything max except for textures / lighting (not enough ram :()

Oh and welcome back to BF2 xlucid, just give in to the urges :D

yea i have to wait like 15 seconds once i join a game for the first time before i can even do anything.

I run the game on medium settings on 1024 x 768 with a 2.66ghz P4, 512mb DDR memory, and a 9600XT 128mb card. Takes some time to load, but it plays totally fine after. Just keep your computer clean and updated and the game runs great.

Probably similar setup in terms of performance here, and I found that setting lightning to low doesn't neccessarily help with the framerate, but it certainly does with loading times.

My problem is that, for the moment, I'm using a single 1-gig stick, and two 512s. Which is stupid, but it plays better than only one gig. As soon as I find the time, I'm going to sell the 512s and buy another 1 gig.

What draw distance did you have it at lucid? I just put mine down to 50% and it runs waaaaay better than 75%.

Draw distance is the most important aspect of the game, it should be the last resort when deciding what things to turn down...

QFT - it should always be at 100%
the further you can see, the more you can kill/stay alive
turn down everything else if necessary

You would think so. Tried many different drivers, no dice. It's even slightly slower after the patch too.
Strange as things like FEAR / CoD2 run butter smooth on max everything.

FEAR and BF2 have different map sizes. FEAR has smaller maps, and less guys on a map (I believe they spawn at certain trigger points.)
BF2 has huge maps that have constantly any amount of guys from 1-64 players. That Is A LOT!

Even on empty servers it is slow. Are you maybe thinking of lag? besides, FEAR and CoD are much more graphic intensive and so should struggle more than BF2. But they don't. It's at it's worst when flying, really crawls then.

I had my draw distance at the recommended level, 75% I think.

No way in hell would I have it any lower.
I think my main reason for the hiatus too, was the ****ing 5+ minute load times x.x
Hence why I hate it when me and some HL2netters or friends are playing, and after the 5+ minutes or so of loading... they message me on XFire saying we're switching servers x.x

Good website with lots of info for tweaking comp and BF2, for those of you with troubles getting the game running / loading smoothly.

Nice job, AiM

gonna run through some of those tonight.

****ing patch won't install...

It gets to 100% on the first Objects file, and says "Patch failed" after half an hour of installing. Bah.

Patching problems usually mean's you'll have to wipe everything BF2 related
and do a complete re-install. The SF expansion is wierd, I think the process goes somewhere like install BF2, then SF, then patch.

Yeah, I figured as much...
I decided to try and run BF2, and it gave me an error...
I should really stop multitasking when installing games. :|
