Hi. I have a question and I've tried searching these forums for an answer but I couldn't find one so here I am asking away.

I recently got a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. I've installed the ATI Catalyst drivers and it is running well. However I don't seem to get 100 fps with balanced settings on OpenGL while I'm playing Half-life: Counter-Strike.

I know 100 fps is no big deal and it's not that much different from 60 or 70 fps, but please hear me out.

I asked a friend why this was so and he told me to check my refresh rate. It was at 60 so I changed it to 75 (the maximum refresh rate my monitor can handle). My friend explained that my monitor is probably the reason that I cannot get 100 fps on Counter-Strike since my refresh rate only goes up to 75.

So I believed what he said and continued to play without caring too much about my fps. However, one week I went to another friend's house and saw that he had the SAME EXACT monitor as me but a different video card.

This friend has the ATI Radeon 8500 LE and he gets 100 fps consistently during both LAN and Internet play. He also uses his video card with balanced settings and he has the same monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 753DF).

Why does my friend get better fps than me when he has a older model? Could it possibly be that his 8500 outperforms my 9600?

I know it's a long read and I'm sorry but I've tried to be as clear as possible. I would appreciate it if any of you can help out.

well i dont think your friend is right about the monitor. Mine is at 60hz and i get 100 fps in counter strike. i have a ti4200. I pretty much get 100fps in every hl mod except dod.

I dont know why you dont get 100, how much ram do you have? do you have a old cpu?

erm.....well without knowing how fast your computer is ....it could be a few things...... Anti-ailiasing and Ansiotropic filtering are jacked up..... and what resolution do you run in? ...im sure a high resolution would slow it down some ...especially with AA and ansio on high settings even with an old game like that.

I get crap fps thxs to my shi**y AMD duron 1.1ghz

I have a old processor AMD Athlon XP 1400+ with 256 mb RAM. Can this be the source of the problem?

I run Counter-Strike at 1024X768 and my friend runs it at 1152X864!

Oh, I tried running with the lowest settings possible without AA and anisoptric filtering. Still the max fps I could get was 75.

Well, you just said you had the screen at 75hz instead of 60hz, topped again? :) Is vertical sync disabled?
And keep in mind that the R300 (and RV350 (the 9600) and R350) are NOT uberfast in OpenGL (though oddly enough they can outpace the fastest FX like 2 times over in UT2k3 OGL :)). They are best in DX.
Also, be sure to use the refresh rate fix... If you got Windows XP, it screws up your games. Also better CPU will help pretty good, a game is not only graphics.

heh, you need to Disable V-Sync.

V-Sync basically locks your possible FPS to your refresh rate, because why have 100 FPS if your monitor only refreshes at 75Hz and shows 75FPS? so yes, you can disable V-Sync and get 100FPS, but it might cause tearing in the game, where the engine is rendering more frames than you can see so it appears to tear the textures.

just change the "wait for vertical sync" option to "always off" in the OpenGL tab of the drivers.

Thanks everyone for the help! It looks like disabling V-sync did the trick.

" you need to Disable V-Sync. "

Thanks :) i needed to do that as well hehe :)
