question about multiplayer

Hi,
Not sure whether this is in the right forum, but it's seemed like a newbie-ish question...
Anyways, I can't figure out how to get on a server to play HL online. I put my OpFor cd in and clicked multiplayer, and registered with Sierra on WON, and then I clicked Quickstart. It said something about it not being up-to-date, so I clicked "OK" to try to update it. Then it started searching through the servers but I couldn't connect to one because, apparently it hadn't updated.
So, could someone help me out with what patches or whatever I need to download, and how to find/connect to a server.
(And, btw, I don't usually play games on multiplayer, if that isn't already obvious.)

Op4 is quite dead now but there's still a few servers floating about for it

Yeah, I realize I'm a bit late in playing it....lol
Oh, and do half-life and opfor use the same servers or different ones?
