I never had any desire for a new weapon in episodes 1 and 2, because I always thought that there simply HAD to be a new weapon in the last episode.

What do you guys think? Is Valve going to give us a new gun? I'm not talking gravity gun ammo, but a new weapon that has its own slot. Personally, I think category 6 is lonely, with it being empty since the end of Half Life 2, and the disappearance of bug bait.

Your thoughts?

That's not the question on everyone's minds. As you will hear from every single person on these forums, the current weapon selection is well rounded and any new weapon would have to be added to improve gameplay and not as a gimmick, and in the expected setting there seems to be little need for any new weapons at all.

We're heading up to the arctic now. Boy, I can't wait for that ice pick! :D

I think the AR2 could use some tweaking. Luckily I hear the arctic is lousy with AR3s.

Oh really. :hmph:

I, for one, am wanting and expecting an arsenal update, if only slight. Valve has done a good job of sidestepping additional weapons with innovation and change in other aspects less... obvious. But there's nothing that can replace that feeling of picking up a brand new piece of firepower. I would just like to kick ass with something fresh, and not in a way that requires grav gun manipulation (ala Magnusson devices). I don't even care if it's just a "fun" weapon. I've always found HL2's general inventory to be less impressive than HL1's. While it is true that the sequel's loadout is on the whole more refined, balanced, and on average more efficient, it's missing the previous game's spice and flavor. Making traps with tripmines, while rarely the best way of taking out enemies, was fun. Snarks were just a joy to rain down on people. While they may not have had wide room for usage most of the time, I'll be damned if they weren't often the most satisfying ones to use.

So... yeah. Gimme a weapon.

I partly agree, but what is something fresh? Common real life guns like M4s or AKs don't bring anything new to the table when we have the SMG and AR2, biological/high-tech weapons without cause or affecting gameplay are cheap gimmicks, a sniper rifle is unnecessary when we have a crossbow and would only really be acceptable if it were mounted, and a portal gun screws up several fundamental game mechanics for a Half-Life game and has dozens of arguments against it in other threads. That leaves Flare Gun which is already catered for by Flares + GG and the Ice Pick is just a Crowbar replacement though it would still be fun to have just for the hell of it.

A new, innovative, gameplay-altering weapon? BRILLIANT! I just can't imagine what that could possibly be.

If there is a new weapon then it's fine by me, but frankly I couldn't care less.

Hey, if you want to go ahead and set your standard up to gameplay-altering, go ahead. I'm not. I just want a new toy to play around with. I specifically brought up tripmines and snarks for a reason. Neither were particularly gameplay-altering either. And nine situations out of ten where they could be employed effectively, you almost always had a better alternative weapon. But it was always entertaining to use them regardless, and I'm right in thinking that Valve is in the business of entertainment, yes? Give me something odd and quirky.

I don't get the big ****ing deal on this forum about new weapons. If you think they'd be unnecessary additions to an already well-rounded arsenal, then just don't use them. I, however, would welcome any extraneous bells and whistles Valve may wish to throw our way, even if it were for the sheer sake of novelty.

So, how many Hunters can you take down bare handed, again? :P

.....

I just hopw we don't get the Portal Gun. That would make the game way too easy.

It isnt really, a question on everybodies mind though is it...

I'm thinking about who will die and what is going to be unvailed technologically wise in episode 3, also who the gman is...

Trip mines were fun...so were snarks. I think the point most people are trying ot make is that Half Life 2 isn't really about the variety in weapons. It's about the gameplay and storyline. So if you can come up with a weapon that can significantly alter or enhance gameplay then it would be worthwhile. Otherwise we'd rather see Valve put their efforts into something else.

Just my two cents.

Agreed 100%. Our arsenal has basically gone unchanged since 2004, with the exception of the addition of the Magnusson device, which really isn't a new weapon but rather Gravity Gun ammo. I'm all for a new weapon if it will enhance gameplay and fun.

Yes, but as I said, nothing can replace the sensation that comes up with picking up a new piece of weaponry. It's inherent in every FPS game, so why try to deny it? It's not like the episodes are churning out revolutions any way, so who really cares if the new weapons in question don't turn the gaming community's collective heads? HL2 may not be a game built on weapon variety, but seeing as how its core gameplay consists of shooting and killing things, I don't think it's too much to ask for a few new ways to do it. Without the gravity gun, that is. As neat as it was having a kind of ammunition for it in Episode 2, I eventually found myself hating to use them. Maybe that's due to the fact that I thought the final segment sucked ass, but regardless. I would have much preferred a damn gun instead.

And I refuse to believe that Valve, in all its creative excellence, is incapable of mixing up the arsenal a bit. The series isn't "above" that, as much as some people here would like to bitch and moan about how standard expansion features like new guns are too primitive for a series like Half-Life. Maybe if the HL2 arsenal was perfect, but it's not.

They're not going to make or break the game for me. But would they be nice? Certainly. But even bringing up the idea seems to arouse an almost contemptuous reaction from these boards.

It's fine if there aren't any weapon additions to the episode. The crop of weapons is pretty good, but a sniper rifle or something out of the ordinary would keep it fresh.

Here's a question that is on my mind: will Alyx change her thong?

Of course I'm more interested in the story more than anything, but I always thought since the release of the first episode that a new weapon in Episode Three was expected, nay, needed. I just think it would make it all the more epic. Yes, the arsenal right now is perfect and balanced, but it's stale to me. Same weapons for four years gets a bit old y'know?

What I don't get is why everyone wants a sniper rifle when we have the crossbow, which serves the same function.

Don't have to lead your target with the sniper rifle.

I'd rather have a new vehicle, personally. I just tried to think of a new weapon and everything I thought of was already there.

But that's why I don't work for Valve.

Idea for weapon: Some sort of "Ice Gun" (Bad Name) that slowly freezes enemys. When they are frozen you can Grav Gun them around.

That, or Ice Snarks...

Hopwire anyone?

Stalker laser?

Autogun beam?

Eh?

That 6th slot needs something...

I think the SLAM should be introduced to HL2 SP, simply because it's a very unique device that would fill an empty space. (The SLAM is the functional equivalent of both the satchel charge and tripmine in HL1) If they do add the SLAM I'd like to see some interesting gameplay scenarios making use of them, laying traps to delay a pursuing force, perhaps?

That said, if I had the choice between a SLAM and something entirely new, I'd go with the latter. I trust Valve to come up with something interesting.

Okay, let's toss some ideas.
What about a flechette launcher, like what the Hunters use?

Already have it. Pick up an object with the grav gun, absorb the flechettes and voila - flechette launcher.

That's a bastard ghetto workaround.

Can't use flechettes if hunters aren't present, can you? CAN YOU?!

I LOL'd.

I was kinda hoping for a new weapon in Episode Three, but you guys are right. Unless it's the Portal gun or something innovative like that, I don't think we need one.

Iiiice Snarks. Can't go wrong with ice snarks.

In other news, I find SLAMs awesome. Be fun setting them across Zombies.

Why didn't valve use the slam? Too many kinks to work out? That's what I'm guessing, cause if you set more than one on top of the other, they go kablooey. :|

Maybe some sorta mine thrower like the Demo Man in TF2 or the Grenade Launcher in BioShock.

Not gonna happen, but I wouldn't mind that one bit.

I think some organic weapon in slot 6 is needed. That slot has been lonely since the loss of bug bait.
