1. If I delete Steam off my system, say in the course of an XP reinstall, will I be able to restore it with the Steam backups, or do they only backup the games?
2. Will the Steam backups also retain the key configs for the games?

Ive never needed to backup, as i just re-download everything, it saves any hassle of corruption from a backed up file.

But im sure it will save the key bindings. If not just re-dload the lot, if u have a decent connection that is ie above 2MB

Ever heard of download limits?

yes i have, but thats your fault really for getting with an ISP that has them.
PS your comment is rather abrupt towards me why?

I was only explaing to him, fuk me.

The backup it unreliable. Back up the games at least twice if you're doing it. I had a bad experience with the back up and I'm on ****ing dial-up ;(

Can't u get satelite internet, its faster than dialup but is abit costy if u cant get Broadband in yer area.

Sorry, but I just tried an experiment in deleting the local TFC files through Explorer, and using the backup did NOT bring back my key bindings.

we'll thats good and bad news to us all, well the ones who use the backup feature.

to be on the safe side, i'd re-dload from scratch, may take along time if your still on 56K Modem, buts its more safe than sorry.

Well, I'm on broadband, and when I lost my main backup disc because the executable crashed, then I thought I'd have a huge download wait, but since my HL2-Ep1 game was intact, downloading took only a fraction of the time. And all the smaller, older games were almost instant.

I have two backup discs, so even if only one still works, I should be OK.

You sir, are an idiot.

You need to realise a few important things. Most of the people that post here are probably kids, that have to live with whatever connection their parent(s) have. And of course, then you need to remember that no matter who's connection it is, or who pays for it, some people do not have a lot of money to throw at high-speed, uncapped connections. THEN, you need to also stop and remember that some countries DON'T have fast internet, OR cost-effective unlimited plans. For example, here in NZ, we have almost 3rd world internet standards here. 3.5mbit connections are the fastest available, and a typical 80GB monthly cap will set you back around $100 per month. Hardly worth it, and that's not even unlimited. But I guess you think it's "my fault" for living in another country.

So shut your mouth about people getting "the wrong ISP", and help them to work with what they have, instead of showing everyone what a tool you are.

"Download it again" is not an option for most people.

" But I guess you think it's "my fault" for living in "

Yup, I agree... your fault, and your parents for turning out such a jackass...:cheese:
.......... get a personality... I hope you are one of those "kids" you speak of ... grow up , and even though this is the internet... have some respect for people that take the time and try to help ....

Hear, hear, Shasta!

I'm lucky in that whilst my broadband is the slowest connection available, it's also uncapped, but I still don't want to download any more than I have to. It's £17.99 pm, in case you're wondering.

Telling someone to "get satellite broadband" or "it's your fault you have a crap ISP, get a better one" is NOT helping. That is being a dickhead. He was NOT asking about ISP's, connection speeds, or re-downloading fu*king anything. He was asking about Steam back-ups - which funnily enough, are mainly there to help you AVOID re-downloading, which is all that idiot Saketi could suggest. Repeatedly. Are you related to him? You seem to made of the same kind of stupid, if you think that people should move countries just because of ISP speeds.

And Taofan - I have never had any problem with using Steam back-ups, apart from how bloody long they take to create and restore. Steam wants to encrypt everything, and of course needs to decrypt it when restoring. It took about 30 mins to make a back-up of HL2, HL2 DM, HL2 EP1, Lost Coast, CS:S. As far as I know, it only backs up the games, so you will need to re-install Steam before using the back-up installer. I think it remembered my savegames, and settings.

im do you have a separte hd, like an extra one? im think'n if so thats all you'd need. I have windows installed on my small drive and steam on my big one. I dont know if it would work but i figured if i ever need to reinstall windows I'd just remove my extra drive, boot windows install drivers etc... then plug in big hd with steam on it!

If you do the backup it probably only saves the game files which it would have otherwise downloaded. Arn't key configs just text files? Saving them shouldn't be a hassle. =p

I've got my whole CS:S file on filefront right now... thought it might comeing handy later.

... you're kidding. That's bloody fast for so much data.

Err - 30 mins to write 7GB of data is not fast at all. Steam pisses around compressing, encrypting, and checking with the internet. Wasting my time. And that's just for a back-up. Re-installing those games, and of course Steam, after a re-format, is pure hell - especially if you haven't done a "Steam backup". It hasn't occurred to them that I might not care if the games are 100% up-to-date right away, that I DON'T want to wait for 2 hours to install / update them, and I just want to install and play it right now, not later. You can't play untill the updates are done, and you can't stop them from starting to update immediately after install. What a joke.

I'm sure software like Steam will be the way of the future, but right now, it's a time wasting, and annoying P.O.S.

Yes but Steam is pioneering that, plus not everything is perfect from the start, it's cumulative and takes time to get better.

Yes, it will take years to develop the technology to backup 7 GB of data in less than 30 mins. And it must take a room full of developers working full-time for years to add a "do you want to check for updates immediately, or just play now and update later?" option after installing too. What was I thinking? We don't have that sort of "futureistic" technology available yet. Oh wait. YES WE DO. In 30 mins, I can back-up the entire contents of my 2 120 GB drives, re-format, and be a good way through re-installing windows. And as for adding buttons and options, well even my ZX Spectrum 48k back in the 80's had those.

Steam is "pioneering" more than just online distribution and copy protection, it's pioneering how to most piss off your paying customers.
