If I pre-order the Orange Box now can I play HL2 now? I don't own HL2 but since it was already released I wonder if I can play it now...

I'm pretty sure you can... it adds those games to your account when you preorder. I didn't have ep 1 on the account I got orange box on and it worked fine.

Trading the extra copy of hl2 and/or ep1 won't work till release though.
