From an interview with Half Life Source on September 13, 2004.

The Making of Half-Life 2 will be a Prima-published work giving a behind the scenes look at some of Valve's company history and HL2's development. The book, which is set to release 14-30 days before HL2, will undoubtedly be required reading for any hardcore Valve or Half-Life fan.

If this is right, we should see the book within a week.

Edit:

No chance, not within a week :)

Hhhmm, just noticed this quote from Cliffe;
Also note that David Hodgson is no longer the author, as any narrative detailing logistics has been dropped in favor of a more in depth "behind the scenes, making of" narrative straight from Valve developers.

Well, that sucks. The way David Hodgson described it, made it sound like a very cool book. Now it looks as though it will have less to do with Valve's history, and more to do with HL2.

So Valve will write it... could be a good thing, good be a worse thing. we're have to see how it turns out. Im expecting it to be an interesting read though, whoever authors it, just because of the subject matter :)

ya it will probably be released around the time hl2 comes out.

Yeah, the Hodgson version sounded interesting, like a view into not just Half-Life 2, but Valve as a whole.

this is bad. They better not leave out the reasons for the delay the original author had that in the original . I smell a corporate cover up

hmm.. i guess it doesn't matter when the book is released because most pple will not read this book until they have completed HL2 so the book doesn't spoil any of the storyline stuff.
