Re-Installing Half Life 2

Hi, I want to reformat my computer but im not sure if i will be able to re-install Half Life 2, won't it say my CD key is in use?
if not will somone please walk me through what to do?

HL2 retail box or HL2 Steam?

if it's retail you can just install it and when you sign in it'll say that CD key is already registered to your account

if it's via steam you just sign in and start downloading again, or use the backups you may or may not have made

Just uninstall, then reinstall via CD. Then go steam use your account that you used before and your steam account already has your cd key saved.

For steam, just delete the local Hl2 files, and load up steam and you will have to re dl them.

That *should* be right.
