With all this drama around here and around 4,000 users online at this time can we do somethings to decrease server resources so the forums run faster? First, allowing only registered users to access general discussions would probably make a huge difference. Second, turning off the ability to see who is online would also cut down on the amount of processes. Third, vbulletin.org has a few cache mods out there that should decrease server load by around 10 - 20%. Only down part to this hack is the forums will have to be down for about 15 minutes while the hack is installed. Some other things that will help, turning down the amount of threads to display to 1 or 2 days for all users, this can be done with a simple mySQL query on the daysprune column (let me know if you need the code for it). You can also turn off the ability to see the members list, turn off the advanced search function, decrease amount of posts per page to 10 or 15, turning off IP banning (I know this is bad but it cuts down on queries, maybe we can do it for today only). These should help out the load time drastically, though they will get rid of some vB features.

Yeah it means a bunch of people will register accounts for one or two posts then dump them leaving a lot of aliases taken for no good reason.

Munro did for a while, made no difference.

Shall get StarMonkey or Mmw to look into it. Contact them both about these hacks via forums PM please.

In general we're quite happy with the way things are although I'm sure this will be discussed among the staff to see if the majority want it changed. You have to remember that this sort of thing only happens to the forums when big, can't be missed news is posted.

Making the amount of posts per page smaller will only increase the amount of pages someone has to load to read an entire thread.

IP banning is a serious no-no. There's some really big morons on these forums that are going to grow up into real idiots, until such a time we need this feature to remove them from our little corner of the internet.

Turning off Advanced Search might be do-able but a lot of people do use it for finding information quickly.

:)

Sure, I will contact them now. Yeah, the amount of posts per day can be a problem but I only meant for the next couple of days until things settle down. If it's set to a smaller amount about 95% of the visitors won't load all those threads at once and will only affect a small percentage. Currently the forums are running extremely slow for me so I just want to inform you guys of all the possible solutions since I have been dealing with vB for a while, thanks for listening.

Fair enough :)

Changing the settings until this all calms down is do-able but the people who know how to do it are all asleep ;(

Ahh, sleep, the root of world's problems :). For some reason the forums are running much faster now, maybe someone gave the server a swift kick in the butt. Ok, off to sleep now.
