Relief mapping ownz normal mappping and bumpmapping!

Alot like parrallax except it gives the total illusion of a totally extruded surface even when you look close up side on, it is rather nice and will make games look totally awsome without the need for masses of polygons.

You can get a relief mapping overhall for Doom 3 and Quake 4 off that site too.

Good times :)

i know isent it awesome too bad i dont have either of those games:P

Now the question is why dont developers use stuff like that? I mean look how much better the game looks.

Performance? it smacks your processor up like a bitch if it self occludes and self shadow's.

How much better is it in term of performance compared to just modeling it in with polygons.
Does anyone have any idea?

I dont know exactley, but alot, simply because its a more elaborate illusion that uses a single algorithm, apposed to polygon detail which would need all that extra processing power on algorithm's for every point.

cool...but i found bugs already:

everything was fine till letters and numbers and shapes apeared...for a moment i thought God was talking to me...
