Restarting steam - no update

I haven't seen an update window come up, and when I look for HL2DM servers I get like 15 of them, half of which have ping in the 1000s.

I've tried restarting steam several times. Any reason why update is not coming up? Or is this problem caused BY the update, though I swear I never saw an update window come up? Any ideas?

right click the game in the "my games" window and open the options... there should be a drop down box, that should be on auto update this game... if it is on there u should be fine...
and a window doesnt pop up when it starts updating, u have to see it by going to "monitor"
