Returning the game when you've registered the key?

Firstly I am in no way returning my game, but have read a lot of posts of people saying they are going to. But if they've registered their CD key to a steam account, how does this work?

Does the retailer need to ask them if they registered the key when they return it, and then contact VALVe to have the key removed from the steam account, or what?

I doubt all retailers are going to to this, which means they will probably sell the game to another customer who will obviously get a "key already in use" message when they try and play.

Bit dodgy really.

There are very few retailers left who return opened PC games these days anyway. I doubt very much they would even consider taking the game back once it had been opened.

Most toy stores in Holland allow you to return software if you return it within 24 hours. But since you can't play without CD or DVD this whole thing doesn't work either :D

I'd hate to be the person that eagerly opens his new HL2, installs it, and then finds out that he can't play it.

That happened to me with Star Wars Galaxies.. I was mega pissed.

Also, if you do purchase a copy and the key has already been registered, help can be found here.

Not many stores allow returns any more--unless the problem is obvious, like a scratched disk, and then it's only to exchange it for the exact same product--but many will buy used software which they resell at many times the amount they paid you (I've seen used software selling for mere dollars less than a brand new boxed copy of the same game!).

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Half-Life 2 is flagged as a "Do not buy back" title simply because of Steam activation.

I was sceptical about this whole Steam business to begin with so I had the sales girl tell me repeatedly that all I had to do was register, not update any filesor anything else. I got her to get a manager to confirm this too so they're ****ing taking that game back when I get a chance to get back to the shop....

Hey man I'd wait a while at least - don't lose faith in this game. Valve will sort their shit out, just be patient.
