Rockstar Games has announced that the PlayStation 2 edition of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories will be released in the US on June 6th and Europe on June 9th.

The game, which is a port of the critically acclaimed PlayStation Portable title, will retail at a budget price point of USD 29.99 or GBP 19.99.

Speaking to investors in March, Take Two CEO Paul Eibeler declined to specify when a next-generation Grand Theft Auto might arrive, although he did appear to rule out this year. With Rockstar's fortunes tied so inexorably to those of its flagship franchise it would seem logical to expect a next-generation GTA title to follow in 2007.

However, Rockstar is also known to be working on a new PSP version of the game - erroneous reports have named it as Vice City Stories, but the company has yet to make any official announcements. So it's also possible, should Rockstar North require more time to deliver a next-gen title, that Rockstar may repeat the Liberty City Stories trick and cushion extended development with another PSP to PS2 transfer.

Bleh, the games coming around examination period. I'll be judging to pick this one up on reviews.

Already a thread on this. Look down about 10 threads.

It's a good game. Definitely designed for portables though, I can't see the point of releasing it on PS2. I mean, the missions are the "pick up and play" type that don't take long to complete, it recycles an old city, and most of the mini-games are geared towards playing it on the go. It just seems silly to release this as a follow-up to San Andreas (even though the plot/characters are better).

It's one of, if not the best portable game ever released for any system. It's probably the best "budget" game ever released. But it just doesn't stack up to the rest of the series, this doesn't seem like it would be good in the long run to lower expectations like this.

Meh. Never liked ANY GTA game. Way to boring for me. The setting/gameplay/story is just to simple and stupid in my opinion.

LCS never impressed me for the following reasons:
It's GTA but with less features!
It's GTA but with worse graphics!
They didn't even bother making a new map!

Just out of curiosity, what types of games do you think have a good setting/story?

In my opinion the setting is perfect - an alternate but very similar version of the US that serves as great satire. The story has funny/interesting characters and serves as a good vehicle for the missions, plus it gets somewhat in depth with the amount of intertwining it has between the four games.

Almost all settings i like some more then others. The whole gangster g-unit thing in GTA really bothers me. Plus the story is crap. I dont even feel there is a story.

It's actually a good decision, I know a lot of stupid gamers who will buy it because there not aware that they will be displeased with it because it will seem very small and basic on the PS2. Why? Because they know nothing about computer hardware.

"It'll still be a good game, you're just a nerd."
Even computer illiterate people should know that a PSP is less powerful then a large console.

The reason I think it's a bad idea is because it will lower people's expectations. So far, at least gameplay wise, each GTA has been bigger than better than the last. This breaks the chain and could cause them to lose consumer confidence.

The only one that focused on the "gangster g-unit thing" was San Andreas, and I fully agree that the plot and characters of that game were not good (with a few exceptions like Toreno and the hippy). GTA3 was heavily based on Godfather/Goodfellas while Vice City was about as close to Scarface as you can get without copyright infringement. The story is mainly functional, to serve as satire (funniest series ever) and move the missions along, but the core plots themselves are better than almost all other games ... because almost all games have piss poor plots.

Ya thats one of the few settings im not really into. Godfather Mafia setting. Just not me. I guess if i gave it a true try i might respect it, but whenever i played any GTA game it seemed very boring. Gameplay and story.
