Well, it hasn't been explicitly said that this never happened (though it is very far-fetched).

The guide was always a very good source of information, even when it had a few facts wrongs. I think the update is good, though I disagree with the Breen contacting Combine, as I very much believe the Combine gained wind of Earth by accident. That goes for the Gman theory too...though, I disagree with almost every Gman theory out there.

The stratagy guide apparently says that the Combine were attacted to Earth by the portal storms (I say apparently, because I don't have the guide myself so I can't check )

I really don't like these theories one bit... for example, G-man tried to prevent resonance cascade? I liked the theory about G-man wanting it to happen (so that it would draw Combine's attention from elsewhere of the universum away) more. And the "Combine contacted Breen" theory is just plain silly.

The website also doesn't state that these are infact just theories enough.
