has valve mentioned or hinted at the bandwidth requirements per player for hosting a hl2 server, or the cpu requirements. if not... does anyone know anything about it?

I haven't heard anything about it, Valve has been pretty quiet on MP so far. You could try e-mailing a member of their staff and see if you could get an answer out of one of them.

They said it's improved net code from what we have now, so expect it to be about the same, if not slightly more leaneant on hosting and such.

The CPU can vary, but you need like 3ghz or more to get full physics on all clients.

I'm pretty sure someone like Yahn has said that all "small physics" (ie. cans) will be produced solely client side, while bigger things like barrels (can be used as cover etc.) will be server side - so I doubt the system requirements would be that high.

I'm thinking around 2.0GHz (AMD 1800XP) would be sufficient.

If its not a dedicated server, the requirements will be much higher, since your not just running calculations for other players, but yourself as well. But thats common sense. :)

Sorry, not sure where. But i'm positive I read they think the current servers in place should be able to handle it.

i fired off an email to Erik Johnson (thanks for the link Chirs_D) and got a reply shortly:

Subject: server bandwidth & cpu requirements question

I asked on halflife2.net forums and no one seemed to know or remember Valve mentioning these so I will ask you. What are the bandwidth requirements per player for hosting a hl2 server, or the cpu requirements per player?

thank you for your time.

-------------

We just don't have this data yet, but it's going to pretty close to what a Half-Life 1 server is.

antimatter, feel free to post that in the Valve Info Thread :)

why does it say you sent that email in 1999? Got your date set right?

I emailed Erik a long time ago, as I was cerious. He is still saying the same as the respones you guys are getting.

I hope what he says is true as i'm planning to get another comp to start a dedicated server.
