Server Welcome screen

Does any one know how to edit the welcome screen on the server? When players logon to the server I want them to see something other than a black square with the steam website. I know it has to do with the motd.txt, but I can't find it under hl2mp. I would like to edit the server.cfg so I can set parameters for gameplay, but I can't find that either. I would assume that I need to make these files and place them in hl2mp for the start-up to read, but I do not want conflicting commands. Is there an expert willing to take a few minutes to explain all this? Ignorance is not bliss, it's frustrating.

well i am no expert i too have questions about servers more dedicated then anything but i can help you i guess if you cant find the motd.txt file then use your computers search engine to find it if you have done that and still no results tell me what kind of server you are trying to run. but if you cant find i could email my
motd.txt file to you.

I was about to suggest that before I read butterknife's post, just search motd and you'll get it.

I have to do that all the time for Garry's Mod.

The MOTD.TXT File is easy to setup. It should be located OR make an empty MOTD.TXT File HERE:


Start by finding your steam install folder (usually default C:\Program Files\Steam or C:\Program Files\Valve)

For in-game server

Steam\steamapps\your_steam_name\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp

For a dedicated server

Steam\steamapps\your_steam_name\source dedicated server\hl2mp



For example

You can just use plain text like this:
Welcome to my server

Or get fancier and use HTML like this:
<B>Welcome to my server<B>

The easy way to do the HTML thing is an HTML editor, just google it to download one and COPY > PASTE the HTML code from the HTML Editor into the MOTD.TXT and viola you have your own nice looking greet everytime someone joins.
