Does anyone know if the servers for HL2 will be up as soon as it is released, or will we have to wait a couple of days?

There will be thousands of servers up before you buy the game, I gurantee it.

I'd imagine for the first week or so you'll see thousands of undedicated servers running off home PCs. They'll go up and down like yo-yos and pings will be abominable.

Of course the big companies like Jolt will probably have servers up the day it's released, if not before.

A week or so after release people will have begun setting up dedicated servers all over the place and within a month there'll probably be as many HL2 servers as there are currently HL servers. Many of them will probably be the same servers, switching games. Expect the amount of HL servers to diminish rapidly.

Rest assured though, the first few days will not be the best time for multiplayer.

It's kind of sad though: after HL2 comes out, most if not all of HL multiplayer mods (CD, Day of Defeat, and millions of independant mods) will just go out of existance. Just out of curiosity, how many people are still on the original Unreal Tournament game?

On the bright side, HL1 will never be forgotten, I'll still be playing it when I'm 80 and HL^35 is coming out.
