I'm suprised there aren't any other threads on this, infact there isnt a single thread in the HL2DM forum with 'listen' in the title.

Anyway, I need help setting up a HL2DM listen server to have a bash with several of my mates. I did it once before, soon after the release of DM, and havent managed to find out how, or managed to do it again since. Here and there I've read about setting up config files, sv_lan 0, etc, nothing seems to work. Whenever I use 'create server' through the menu, the game is always served over the LAN, although I dont actually have one.

I know that a dedicated server would probably be easier to set up, and give a lower latency, but I want to be able to join in the fun as well. So... how to set up a listen server?

Sorry for starting a thread on a subject which is possibly a very simple one, maybe I just missed something.

Need more information bud.

Are you behind a router?

Erm , if you are not, it should be quite simple.

Create the game via steam hl2dm.

sv_lan 0 in the console, then restart a map (occasionally it isn't added to the master server list it seems).

Make sure you give your friends your external IP address rather than internal.

To find that out, the quickest and easiest to explain is to goto this site .

Then add the port :27015 at the end of it

Example 62.178.178.5:27015

IF you are on a router you need to open / forword specific ports:
UDP 1200 (used for friends service)
UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive
TCP 27020 to 27050 inclusive

Easiest way is to put your router into DMZ mode. Where the IP of the DMZ is your computer (192.168.*.*).

However, i'll try and explain all of the garbage if you confirm that you have a router.

Hope that helps.

Strange. I am behind a router, but connecting my PC directly to the modem doesnt help. I've already forwarded/opened all of the ports required. I never tried restarting a map, maybe I'll give that a go. Many thanks for your help.

Going to bed now :| very tired.

Ensure all firewalls are configured correctly to allow the game to communicate with the outside world.

try router in DMZ mode just as a test. (although you said you plugged cable directly into cablemodem)

make sure your friends are adding the server correctly to their favorites lol.

Ensure you are bringing up the console and then typing sv_lan 0 then pressing return.

Then type map dm_overwatch or whatnot.

On the console screen is should now say "Adding master server"

Anyhow, i'm tired, hope that helps.
