I'm aware that not a whole lot of people visit the Fiction forum but that some people who don't might be interested in taking part. So there you go, I guess this is a public service announcement. This may be slightly spammy - me, absuing my moderator powers? - but I will soon delete this topic.

EDIT: The title is murderous. What exactly do you mean by pretending to be or follow the style of a genre? What genre? I don't take literature and it all seems confusing

Lovecraftian Horror. Romance. Science-Fiction. Thriller. These are all genres. And you pastiche them by taking their quirks, their trends and their cliches, and pumping the amp to 11.

Yep. Another option is to play them completely straight - what if the world really acted like this? It would be ridiculous!

By adopting the guise of the attacked work, the artist reveals its inherent ridiculousness. A pastiche is something that copies or mimics elements of another work's style, possibly in a humorous way, but usually just as an affectionate nod to another artist's work. While the artist may have made the pastiche in homage, the work itself does not necessarily make any points, favourable or unfavourable, about the original.
