I was reading Darkside's thread. . . and came to a slight realization, of a theory I made up a while ago. Could it be possible, that the Pit Worm (from Op4, the one thing in the sewage duct or whatever) is related to the Snark? They both hav antennae, and their color scheme is similar, especially the eye, being Tourquoise-ish green, and they bothe have claws etc, speculation?

Good...God. You...you may be onto something with that.

/me retreats to his secret research laboratory to mull over this

My prefered theory is that Snarks were developed (0r at least used) as biological weapons by Nihilanth and his lads.

Yeah, but that's also provided they live, so maybe then, as long as no one stumbls across them, they grow, eat their siblings, and achieve a state at which they are stable, and move to a new location Oo

I noticed this the first time I saw a Pit Worm, just never put lots of thought into it.

And if what Rio says is true, then why don't we see Vorts and etc using them?

I feel like reading a thread from 1999.

So, basically, if a snark is good and works real hard, he can grow up into a giant worm which shoots lasers out of its eyeball?

Their life span is way too short, and they are not tasked to do something.

Mines? I thought those things were egg sacs or something, grown by the snarx.

Are we mixing canon? If Snarks (available in the original Half Life universe) are related to the Pit Worm (Race-X specimen), a black hole might result.

Then again, if we can correlate the two of them, we might fix a rift that already exists (the one that resulted from Race-X's creation).

I'm down - I thought the critters from Race-X were pretty fun to play and could add more depth to the story. Were they likewise running from the Combine? Mercenaries for the Combine sent to Xen to rout out the fugitives and/or do preliminary intelligence gathering for the Combine pending their Terran invasion? Didn't Valve state something about Race-X and canon?

Disclaimer: These are rhetorical questions, probably dealt with somewhere already and not meant to derail this thread.

Please not another Race X and Xen link ;(

I hate Race X.

Ahh, but no one said 'Race X' was itself, a whole group on it's own, maybe the shock troopers and Voltigores etc, but some essence of Race X, may not even BE Race X, it's just because we saw them in a game which featured a new race, and we suddenly found other things we presume they're ALL Race X? Think outside the box man ;P.

Also, a Snark's life span is short, AFTER being thrown, or in that one vent where they continuously come at you, we never have (an probably never will) see a Snark live to a higher stage, maybe, if they were brought into a Valve game, and we saw them live, but until then, no luck =(

Maybe they grow into something in the egg sac, until it isn't disturbed.

Or maybe the nests are the real species and the snarks themselves are just a defence mechanism?

Immune system. . . that's out of the box Oo.

If you play the PC version, it looks like a small creature, but in PS2, it looks more like a nest inside a decaying rib cage

Screenshot for those with crappy internet conections?

Oh yes, I remeber those now. Thanks. One of the few things that Gearbox made less cartoony with the HD pack.

Yup, damn Gear Box, the 'nest as a creature' theory could hold up though, it depends on if we decide to acknowledge Gear Box's take on the nest or not. If we just say 'screw Gear Box' then the 'Snark-Pit Worm' theory, is more or less out the window. If we just say they're BOTH nests, then there's still hope =D.

I just take it that everything Gearbox is canon unless overriden by Valve. Also, everything in Half-Life 1 is canon unless overriden by Half-Life 2 or the episodes.

Chain of canon:
EP2 > EP1 > HL2 > HL1 > OP4, BS & Decay > Uplink & Lost Coast

Eg, the new vortigaunt skin in EP2 (Smoother & shinier) overrides the HL2 vortigaunt skin as canon which itself overrid the HL1 (Which had a different number of eyes, different legs etc.) vortigaunt skin as canon. So I would take the original skins as canon over the HD pack ones.

Does that override the 'Bracelets and Necklace' from HL 1 though? I mean, if you've played Decay, you'll know that those are removable assets, and seem to have something to do with the Vort's ability to create electricity. . . although, following your chain, HL2 would be Decay anyways.

I see nothing wrong with Race X. I mean wern't they the Nihilanth's soldiers anyways? Vorts are part of Race X...

No, those were just their slave collars. They removed them after Nihilanth died and they were freed. They did have them, they just took them off.

There are two possibilites for the Decay collars generating the lightning.
  1. HL2 contradicts it so therefore it didn't happen

  2. As another poster once suggested: The collars were used to weaken the vortigaunts and did so by absorbing much of their energy. The science team, while investigating the vorts, discovered how to discharge the energy stored in the collars, which is what you see in Decay.

Yeah you also see the collars in all the other HL1 games IIRC. They're slave collars. Also, I think something Valve put out mentioned that they explode if the Vort is disobedient.

Hmm. . . interesting. . . I still don't think Race X is all one group though =|

The necklace on the vorts mind control them, the collars controls their lightning.

The HL1 vorts have animations where they claw at their collars in pain.
