So are the Striders really the most impressive enemy?

the striders didnt really impress me as much as i think it would :)

i think because i saw them a lot in the movies already, maybe if i hadnt seen em before they would have been better.
they where still cool though.

but i was far more impressed by other things in the game
(i did think WOOOOW a lot in this game :P )

The bink video striders compared to the in-game striders is kinda dissapointing. Not that the striders wernt fun, its just the bink got me to believe the striders destroyed the surroundings by accident or using AI (to get under a bridge, ect...). In game they seemed to be almost completly scripted(they did the same thing every time i loaded and fought again) Also those striders frequently used there secondary fire which killed the player in 1 hit. In the game they only used that move in scripted sequences and did 0 damage to me when i walked in front of it. Also the binks led me to believe that bullets and what ever you can find for the gravity gun would damage the striders. Those battles looked much more intense then my crouch-behind-rocketcrate-stand-spiral-rocket-repeat battles. While not as impressive as the binks, this was one of my favorite parts of the game. alot of the scripted sequences with the striders were cool.

All I want to know is what happen to the great AI in all the creatures? Remember that one bink video where the strider couldnt pass because of the crap in the way and it just blew it apart? And then the strider just crawled under. I didnt see any of that in the game. Its like they dumbed down the AI because it was too good at first.

No, all of that fancy stuff that we saw in the binks was scripted, the AI has never been that good. Its very misleading and one of the things that has really irritated me about HL2.

Yeah, striders were twice as cool in the binks. Although there was an awesome sequence once when I was running away from a strider, into an abondoned shop, hid behind the counter and actually ducked in my chair when bullets started smashing through the windows, braking tables and chairs and anything else in the room.

It'd be sweet to have a multiplyer mod where you can drive the striders... VALVe said that they made all the vehicals drivable just to prove a point. or something like that.

Interesting... in the Raising the Bar book, a concept for this design appears on a page with designs of Stalkers. It looks pretty out of place (A grey muscle-bound guy with something odd on his neck and a bulge on the left of his chest versus a bunch of skeletal amputees), so I'm not sure what it means... Either its inclusion as a Stalker design was a mistake (and It doesn't exactly say "THIS IS A STALKER DESIGN"), or it's a transitionary phase between Normal Human and Stalker... I'd say that it was the later, but that does look like some kind of Organ sack...

The tanks thingies are another species absorbed by the universal union (combine), and were "forced" to elvolve.

Read raising the bar, it explains a lot of things.

DONT VIEW THOSE LINKS UNLESS YOU BEAT THE GAME!

Hell yeah, what the hell were those? I wanted to fight those! Also, what the heck were the combine doing to those people? They are so skinny and skeleton like. Two screenshots depicting what i'm talking about.

They are called The Stalker. they were amputated humans that the combine turned into a slave laborer. They rip out all the organs and run them on a saline solution so they are easier to maintain.
