So we know a little about the beginning...now let's speculate!

Ok. We know that the game begins with Gordon not knowing where, when, or how he is.

In a way, that's the same as HL1. Gordon may have known all about the black mesa research facility, but we certainly didn't. The Test Chamber, the expirement, the HEV suit, we had to figure that all out. In a way, we were all amnesiacs for that game.

Now it seems more direct. The intention seems to be amnesia. What i'm wondering about is this:

How do you think the game will start? I think Valve will certainly reference the first game with some sort of semi-interactive ride, similar to the black mesa trolley, but maybe not as long. some sort of trip though, I was thinking a bus ride into a deserted city 17 maybe? maybe interrupted by the combine who are friendly at first? I hope it's similar to the first one...when i played Day One, i was literally trembling with excitement by the time the expirement was starting up.

ok, your turn-

Yeah, a bus ride or a train ride ( as shown in the movie ) into City 17.. OR Maybe that Dr Brown ( what he's name is , the doctor that is in the Alyx movie ) finds Gordon somewhere and you will woke up in a hospital.. Later on they say " Ah, Mr Freeman, at last you woke up. bla bla combine is, bla bla " . Something like that would be nice ;)

the intro after he recalls the conversation with gman at the end of hl1 goes like this from a comment from gabe 2 months ago.

you are dropped right into the action, You have no weapons and are being chased by a group of aliens or something alike he said, you are running for your life and eventually you come across the HEV suit

My best guess is that Freeman's been kept in a coma by the G-man in order to keep you protected until he needs you again. The G-man forces you into conciousness, and you wake up in an annexed hospital or something similar. Your screen fades from black, and the only thing in the room is the hospital stuff and the G-man, who says "We've been rather busy in your absence, Mr. Freeman." He continues to talk as he leads you to a streetcar which promptly takes you to Alyx and Eli, who give you either your old HEV suit or an upgraded HEV suit.

My guess is that HL2 first takes place where the original HL left off-you noe, the cart wit the GMan. Maybe the portal he goes thru takes him to da future!

5 Years Later. Gordon is a Successful Alien Control Specialist.

He's sitting by the pool of his Brentwood mansion, two Blondes nearby, sipping an Iced Margaritta, and smoking a fatty.

A helicopter comes into view and hovers over the court yard, G-man leans out, points to Gordon and brings a crossbow like device to bear on a nearby palm tree.

A metallic canister, attached to a large arrow lodges into the palm tree no more than 20 feet from Gordon.

As the chopper leaves, our hero nonchalantly puts down his drink and walks over to the canister, cigar still in hand.

Deftly turning one end the object comes to life, whirring open and extending a pair of highly modified RayBans, Bozworth style.

Gordon casts aside his stogie, oblivious to where it lands, he has now been reactivated, and he knows all to well that it is so forvery grave reasons.

Removing the RayBans he slowly puts them on his tanned, go teed face. A message begins to appear......................

I don't really like the idea of being dropped directly into a mess of action. I hope valve has the good sense to at least give a small slow intro...i loved that about hl1

Don't worry Spiffae, Valve will give us some sort of intro. The flying things at the end of the e³ could somehow work.

................... a VR message begins to play. An image of the G-man appears "Good to see you again Misster Freeeman, I hope you enjoyed your temporary retirement, but now a new situation has arisen which will require your ... er... unique talent."

"Now listen very carefully, this optical device will now proceed to initiate memory lapse procedure, you know the rules, don't blink for five seconds after the blue light begins pulsating.......

next you will be given ssspecific insstructions on your rendevous with other ....er.. company personnel, before continuing to the mission point... you will then be briefed on the ssspecifics..

good luck Mr. Freeman I will see you.... up ahead"

A blue pulsating light begins to focus Gordon's mind, he soon does not know, nor care whose Porsche he is driving to the meeting point. He is now focused on the situation at hand......

Specualtions, it's all speculations. So what is there to talk about?

With everything I have read so far I think(although not) that the game will start with Gordon lying on a stretcher being pushed through a hospital while his hevsuit say all those "titration of 30 ml sample sustained" things and it all would be a little like the tramcar intro ride in HL1.(although I think I have read that HL2 might not have the same kind of intro like HL1). And then when you lie there and just watch around the wall infront of you blows out and out comes Alyx and together u fight youre way out from the evil hospital. And then alyx and yourself discover what have happend. :D

im going with 'totally unlikely' :)

I'm not a big fan of intro's. I liked the old fashioned way of dumping you in the game, with a pistol.

My idea: You start off in a cryogenic tube. You start by seeing black, and it slowly "opens" like when you open your eyes. Your vision is blurred, and all you see is green and three blobs moving around. Slowly, your vision is focused. You hear the liquid start to drain, and slowly the green vision disappears. The sound of decompressing air is heard as the tube opens from the side.

A scientist rushes forward and seizes you by the arm, hooking up a scanner. "Life signs normal," he says. Slowly, he lifts you out of the tube and helps you stand on your own feet. The scientist runs back behind a console and returns with your HEV suit. He rushes you in to a nearby changing room and tells you to get dressed. (Gordon is in his boxers.)

You slip into the HEV suit and it activates. (It does the sampling stuff.) After it's done, you walk out of the stall where the G-Man and an unfamiliar girl are standing. The G-Man says,

"Welcome back, Mr. Freeman. We've been very.. busy.. in your absence..." The girl steps forward and holds out her hand to you. You take it, shaking it promptly. "I'm Alyx," the girl says. You stay silent.

The G-Man explains that Alyx is your new partner, and she'll be joining you shortly, but you have to do your first mission by yourself. He explains what the Combine are, and what your objective is, and sends you on your way.

Plausable?

This is like Half-Life fanfic....not a good thing. :b

Meh, there's 90 days left and a long summer ahead. Let em speculate :)

Hmmmm... Wouldn't that be funny id the game starts out with Gordon getting it on with Alyx???:bounce: Then the G-Man:devil: appears behind him and taps him on the shoulder.......

"Getting busy are we?? You have a job to....get started on..."

Alyx looks up and sees the G-man. Suprised, she bites down hard. Gordon Freeman blacks out.....

Gordon is such a pimp :afro:

Uhh... I think Gabe already talked about the beginning in an email somewhere in another thread.
What is the point of this speculation anyways?
Gabe said that you wake up and don't know where you are and only remember your conversation with the G-man... Well, thats kinda what Gabe said.

Edit: I can't find the thread where his email is :bonce:

Gabe has already confirmed the beginning to some extent. There is no amnesia of the events of hl1, its just that the last thing that you remember is the gman offering you a job and you accepting it. Hl2 will then no doubt begin with you waking up or something. I think that the coma theory is very stong, as it would explain the health monitor at the end of the gameplay video monitoring gordon's condition while he was in the coma. I think that the first thing you will hear is the gman talking to you and filling you in. this would explain the "We've been rather busy in your absence mr freeman" quote from the video (unless this was just included as a pun referring to the 5 years since half life and how valve have been rather busy in our absence). The screen will then probably fade out once the gman has filled you in on what you've missed, and you will be dropped into the action (perhaps as a test from the gman to see if gordon can still fight or something!!) Hopefully in this new info from valve which will supposedly be released this week or next, we will find out a little bit more about the story, weapons and enemies, etc. Although i think that the story is going to be kept secret until the game's release.

Well, someone mentioned that HL2 will be based 15 years into the future after the events at Black Mesa. Well, Gordon walks into that teleport in the end of HL right? Perhaps it is a timewarp or something, directly bringing you into the future and so the beginning of HL2...

thus Gordon not remembering a thing between BLack Mesa and HL2 because he traveled directly to the beginning of HL2...

My guess is that they really have no idea on how to make the beginning, so they are waiting for fan input to help them make the story unfold.

Would explain the silence of the MP aspect of the game also..

Dev1- What should the MP be like?
Dev2- How about just plain DM?
Dev1- That's old though, probably won't cut it with HL2 fans.
Dev2- Well, let's not say anything and let them speculate til we find something they like interesting!
Dev1- GREAT IDEA!! Let's tell them we have something great instore for MP and then when everyone figures out what it could be we will announce it as the MP feature in HL2!
Dev3- What about TF2?
Dev1and2- TF what?

(This is just a little humour, do not flame me because I love HL and think Valve are doing a wonderful job with the sequel.)

Anyone have a "saved game" just after the baby? i don't feel like going threw that again and i want to see the ending again!

Anyone else find it cool how you started out on a train and then you ended like that? I loved it :p. Maybe like other posters said, you take the trolly around town. It'd be cool if you ended on it, or at least to me.

No, I'm pretty sure the game begins on the docks. Or at least the docks are somewhere very early in the game because that's where you get your crowbar.

How do you know Valve didnt just make that scene up for e³???

Well, Gabe said that were looking at "Half-Life 2 the Game." All the other scenes look like they are from the game, there is no reason why this one can't be.

Well, the e3 prison scene... there are 2 screenshots which say e3_prison as title for the map. I guess it was only for e3. Same thing could apply to that scene.

Thx dude

i dont really know about the beginning, but i do have an idea about the aliens. The combine are captured people from the military from the first game, who have been changed and put under the control of the aliens. which would explain their human appearance and weapons

All the maps at E3 were strictly for E3. Notice they all faded in and out and loaded completely new, non sequential maps. It's kinda obvious.

I highly doubt it. See above.

While it would make the whole "last thing you remember" thing make sense. How could someone be removed from the past yet still have a complete history in the future. Paradox. Not likely. (IMHO)

That I believe. But it still leaves a lot of questions.

Did Gabe actually say "There is no amnesia"? I never saw that anywhere.
Personally I think Gordon will have been injured in a battle somewhere and have been in a Coma for an extended period.
He awakes suddenly with a mild case of Amnesia. Perhaps the location where he was being cared for is under attack and he's jolted awake. He flees and barely escapes the conflict alive. After getting on a bus and being driven around the city which is under siege but still carrying on somewhat normal life (like Iraq) (opening credits roll/intro) he accidently stumbles into the hands of some militants. They realize he doesn't know what the hell is going on in the world and begin briefing him on the current world situation. Gordon begins having flash backs from HL1 and events since HL1. Suddenly he realizes he's been fighting on the wrong team and is with the good guys now. He meets Alyx and Dr Kleiner (E3 demo) but is suddenly seperated from them when they come under attack. Gordon embarks on his personal journey of righting his previous wrongs with the weapon given to him by Alyx. Later Gordon meets the G-man again who tries to convince Gordon that he was on the right side and that this resistance he's currently fighting with are in the wrong. He fills Gordon in on all the work they've done together in the past in the hopes of bringing Gordon's memory back. But Gordon's memory is already back and he decides to stay with the good guys and the G-man is once again the enemy.

I dunno. This is all my gut feeling based on what I would do. It feels right.

The way I am kind of thinking follows the Gabe line of thinking, in that you are Gordon Freeman, you see everything through his eyes!

Now since you are this person, then it makes sense that you do not know what has happened in between the 2 games (or 15 years if you like).

The whole point is that you will find out as the whole story progresses. Kind of a strange thought, but best answered when going through the game!

I think that if Valve is looking at all those speculations, they probably a few hours of laughing ;)

BY the way, i think it will start with some kind of trip, like the train inte the beginning of HL.

That could work to, sort of bringing back memories ;)

In the dry sea area, are those train tracks or an oil pipeline? Up close they sort of look like train tracks, but they have an oil refinery there so I'm not sure.

I doubt they do the whole exact train thing again...they'll at least put a new twist on it if they do it.

yeah, porobably it wont even be a "train-like" thing. but something like that. some transport of some kind... (excuse bad english =) )

The game could also begin this way:

You are having confused vision\flashbacks and then you suddenly wake up in the middle of explosions and fightings (maybe the combine are bringing you to a place where they brain wash ppl, but their truck is ambushed by a group of rebels) you run to find a cover, then a group of rebel comes to bring you to their base.

Also, it's likely that the events between the two games will be unfolded later in the game (not just at the beginning) so npcs with hidden agendas that realize you have a partial amnesia could tell you some bullshit to deceive you
