someone explain to me HL , HL OP, HL Blue Shift

I was wondering...

Does Half Life 2 picks up where Half Life 1 left off?

Cause I read that Half Life Opposing Force and Half Life Blue Shift are stand-alone expansion packs..

So does the Half Life Opposing Force starts right after Half Life 1 and Blue Shift starts right after Half Life Opposing force and then Half Life 2 begins and well into Episode 1 and Episode 2?

How are they all tied together, someone please explain... I tried wikipedia but I don't get jack crap...from it. So I need someone who played all of them and has a good knowledge of the story. Thank you!

Opposing Force and Blue shift both take place in the same timeframe as HL1, but from the viewpoint of two other characters (Adrian Shepard, a Corporal in the US Marines, and Barney Calhoun, a Black Mesa security guard respectively).

So do those 3 games Half Life 1 - O4 - Blue Shift tie up Half Life completely and start Half Life 2? Or is it like HL 1, 04, Blue Shift is all happening at the same time???

They are all happening at the same time. Barney and Shepard are in Black Mesa at the same time as Gordon is.

Well, Blue Shift starts a few minutes before HL1 and ends in the middle of it, while Op4 starts pretty late into Gordon's adventure and ends a few hours after HL1. But yeah, in general, they take place at the same time.

You even see eachother. Shepard sees Gordon, Gordon sees Barney and vica versa, ...

HL2 doesn't pick up where HL left off either, not in the conventoinal sense. There has been time pass since the incident at Black Mesa.

You don't need to play through either OP4 or BS to understand the story to HL2. HL2 Picks up where HL1 ends, well sort of. Ten Years later, but there is nothing that OP4 or BS add to the story that you need to know about to be able to pick up with HL2

And also, Op4 and BS were canon, meaning nothing that happened in game actually "happened" in the HL universe to change or alter anything. They were just story arcs.
