Now I have just been browsing through some of the HL2 GCF's in a random quest to find some of the sounds in the game (Such as Dr Kleiner's "Oh Fiddlesticks" and Barneys "And If you see Dr Breen, tell him I said F*** You!"
However while browsing I came across the file that stores all the voice sounds for the people that fight alongside you (Alyx, Barney male and female resistance fighters) and I noticed another folder. Vortigaunt. Now what this means I don't know. But it does sound like the Vortigaunt was intended at some point to possibly follow you into battle recharging you suit as it goes.
Which is something of course we'll only know when the full SDK comes out but it does lead to an interesting idea. Because if we can have Vortigaunt's following us into combat the mission pack ideas could be a little bit more interesting.

source sounds\root\hl2\sound\vo\npc\vortigaunt
Just in case anyone wants to read up on it.
