....does anyone still play this, I use a add on patch from a mod site to give more options and ships and improve graphics etc.

I did, if you really want good StarTrek games, check out the Starfleet Command series, the second game is the best, the third was simplified for more unexperienced users, and the first one was too flawed.

I have heard of others Gargantou but not ones where you command a starship.

StarFleet Command 2(Orion Pirates is the best vers) does just that, it puts you as a starship commander for like about 15 factions+ in the Star Trek universe, in a dynamic war campaign, where you earn prestige etc both to upgrade and buy new ships and form a small armada e.t.c..
