Starting server without pressing new game button in HL2:sp

Alright im trying to test some hl2 single player maps but i am having to start a new game then use the changelevel command. is their a command that sorta creates a game like hl2dm button create server, without having to start up the hl2 single player maps and just go straight to th emap you want to test?

type 'map <mapname>' in your console.

Not sure what you mean. To load up a custom map you have to first load a default HL2 map? Can't you just bring down the console on the menu screen when you start HL2 and do 'map mapname'?
