When I installed hl2 late last year I had the exact same configuration I have now except for a new video card. I have a SB Audigy 2 and a 5.1 speaker setup. The game was fine with surround sound while I was using my GF4 Ti4800, but now that I have a GF 6800 GT, the center speaker produces a lot of static in the game. All other games/movie and music playing are fine. Anyone know what is going on? Should I reinstall the game?

I've had static/popping in other games, it was due to sound acceleration. Open dxdiag and change the sound acceleration to "basic" or "standard."

Hope that helps.

actually, I just uninstalled steam and hl2, reinstalled, and now the problem has dissappeared.

A different problem that existed before: My hardware accelleration tab says "Direct X 8.1" instead of what it should be: 9.0. Is there anyway to fix this? I can set it to 9.0 via "mat_dxlevel 90", but I don't want to have to do that every time I turn the program on.

hmm, it would seem that the reinstall fixed everything. oh well.
