Steam tells me I played 30 hours of TF2 - but if I add up all the class play times, I get 15.8

Where did 14 hours go?

Time is money :)

Mine doesn't add up either...maybe the class play time doesn't account for the time you spend spectating/waiting to respawn?
Although I doubt that would add up to several hours...unless you left it on spectate and ended up being afk longer than you thought you would.

Dunno D:

Steam adds in total time the game is running.

And yeah, stats are only counted while controlling a character.

Jesus, that's a lot of spectating. Damn you, sudden death!

14 extra hours though?

That just doesn't seem right...unless, again, you left the game on while not playing.

I have about 5 and a half extra hours on mine (total running time of 13.9 hours) and I only recall leaving the game running in spec one time for an hour or so.

I have about 48% (9 hours) extra time. I am not sure why. Download and install might be included?

Here's an idea, play for exactly one hour, using one character, and see what adds up.

Also, if your game crashes frequently, like mine occassionally does, well there's your problem. You ain't got no engine!

My play time is ~30 hours. But the classes add up to about 20. And my game doesn't crash at all. :O

Now that you mention it, a lot of my games ended in a crash, which means the time wasn't counted in the stats, but steam did count it.

Found it, myth busted.

25->16.5 for me.

Minus that hour or so I lost because of the refresh rate crash and a few instances of 'not quitting properly,' it seems like we're losing about a third of our apparent.. 'play time'.

Probably a quirk in the stats system, hopefully they find it before release D:

I'm submitting this as a bug, for what it's worth...

I can see some waiting to spawn time, but not 1/3rd. The stats themselves argue against that.

Let's say the average time waiting after death is about 8 seconds. Now, unfortunately we don't have an average life length statistic, but I can do some rough estimation.

Assuming my highest Soldier kill streak coincides with my longest life, that means my average lifetime is somewhere around 46 seconds (which saddens me) based on my average kills per life. Meaning, for the soldier at least, I should have five times more time playing than waiting to spawn.

Of course, this may not hold true with other classes. The soldier is essentially my best attack class at the moment, and all others excluding the engineer are lower. So it very well may be possible that I have waiting that much between spawns - but it still seems unlikely.

Maybe it doesn't count "waiting for players" and the time before a round actually starts (60 seconds) as playing time counted in your stats.

I'm sure it's either a bug, or something we don't understand in the counting system. Hopefully Valve will let us know \=

As was already mentioned, if your game crashes, then all the stats you accumulated during the current round are lost. They appear to be saved whenever a round ends or you leave a server. Not sure if they count the mini-rounds in Hydro.
