Steam Client Beta Adds "Steam Broadcasting" Livestreaming Service

The most recent, potentially innovative Steam feature has arrived in the form of "Steam Broadcasting", which allows users to spectate their friends via a built-in livestream. Once livestreaming, viewers and streamers can interact with one another using the standard Steam chat.

By opting into the latest Steam Client Beta, a new "Watch Game" button on the Steam Friends List can be used to watch a friend's game live. But haven't Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive had this functionality for years? Well, yes - but this time, it would appear any Steam game can be instantly livestreamed to other users via the Steam Client, rather than having to use in-game functionality itself (any game can be livestreamed, including both multiplayer games such as Dota 2 and singleplayer/co-operative titles such as Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel). Should the streamer prefer, they may also livestream their own desktop and the various windows displayed on it.

Currently, both the streamer and the viewer must have opted in to the Steam Client Beta in order to be able to view or host a livestream. Given the system is still in beta, it currently lacks a number of features likely set to be ready in time for a final release, such as a wider selection of web browsers (Steam, Chrome, and Safari are currently supported) and archived livestreams, which are listed as being "currently live only". Livestreaming settings, such as bit rate, video dimensions, microphone, and desktop settings can be changed via the Steam Client's Settings panel, which has been updated to support Steam Broadcasting.

in other words, now anyone can make any video streaming .. I have a system virtualization any device ;) and so if you want to watch porn just make a virtual device and makes it live on your friends list! I think that this will be a good bots system!
 
a little bit about the future Steam>>: lot of porn dirty dollars... dirty whore who will send you invites.. more viruses.. terrorism.. and the inability of the company's employees Valve to monitor and work with the community! Welcome to the Future!
 
some time ago I talked about the problem of interaction with the community (in particular, the hacker community) has recently been a wave of mailing virus that the use of children's hack: the result of this work the company has introduced restrictions.. and so the next step viruses that infect video RAM !

P.S. I do not create viruses but I am part of the hacker community !
 
This is insanely cool. I can't see myself ever using Twitch again once all the bugs are worked out of this.
 
This is so cool, and it doesn't seem to affect performance of the streamer which is even cooler. I wonder if you could stream non-steam games that you add to your library...

As mentioned in my post, you can also stream straight from your desktop, meaning ANYTHING can be streamed.

Check Steam Settings for a full list of cool features.
 
Cool! Admittedly, I doubt I'd use it that much.

Hmm... I wonder, though... would it be much work to modify this to act as screen recording software? For, say, "let's Plays" or capturing raw footage for latter editing?
 
The only thing I understood about his post was that porn is coming to steam, and I'm ok with this.

Edit: by "him" I mean foxleks. I wrote this post four hours ago on my phone but forgot to submit.

I feel like Valve's project pipeline is really just becoming a cluster**** of half baked ideas that never really amount to anything worthwhile. Maybe I'm still stunned by how terrible their music player was, but I feel like all the most recent features have been like 10% of what they could have been.

Steam music sounded dumb and was dumb in practice. This sounded awesome and it totally ****ing is, even if it doesn't get any new features added. Being able to just watch one of my friends playing whenever I want without any effort required on their part is literally the best thing that could happen to streaming.
 
I changed my mind.

I still don't like the music player (which I think could be good if they tried) or the Streaming system, and I don't like the UI at all, but thats not a new thing.
 
What sort of audience is this intended for? Is it like vegeta suggested where you can just watch your friends with out opening there game and spectating and meant for small audiences, or is this meant for large audience/uses like having full time streamers who stream 5 days a week with a usual crowd of around 10,000 people?
 
I would guess it's mostly for friend-oriented experiences and livening up game store pages/hubs, as I think anyone who has a crowd that large would be making money on Twitch. If Valve eventually implements a subscriber model (and better chat with moderator tools etc) then it would be serious competition for Twitch.

Yeah... Now people can play video games for you, because we don't want to. Great news Volvo.

Although, this is a great step for Steam as a community.

for reference: Steam be registered with 13 years. This means that if there is porn or other nude scenes and scenes of violence Steam inform users about it.

Many of us suffer when there are restrictions on games region. Сan at the moment Steam gets banged from porn :) as in countries such as Germany porn in 13 years will mean blockers Steam server !

so that I can once again give the thumbs up for Gabe ! as its system of administration within the steam community is not able to work effectively.

nop. Porn is just a tool to influence on the bad system administration Valve.
We all know when it comes to steam Artwork and Porn administrators do something simple algorithm naked bodies when the bot determines the image to the server and blocks Image.
But now We can see streaming video and porn.. and inability to control their users and many millions of costs for implementing this function to customer steam.. but as in the previous cases (music, Steam OS) everything turns to dust ..
I am a member of the community of gamers and I am also a member of the hacker community (of course I'm a geek) and I love Steam and Valve but in recent years they have completely forgotten that they are a developer company and many good people were forced to leave the company :( also Gabe is an old dude and he can not fully deal with the company.. Top managers do not understand business games development :( They're just greedy ready to pump billions of dollars making reseller company games.
All these problems and the fact that there is no rigid system administration community >> lead to total chaos community of gamers..

I loved Steam when it was dark green when no one knew what would be inside the community that is all of our favorite games through Steam and when Gabe visiting each exhibition and conference said that all game developers need to sell their games through Steam and that this is the future !
but now We can see as they relate to developers (which can get banned) and how they relate to gamers throwing us cheap games and not giving us any rights (Support the worst in the world) and when they get an open letter from the community on security issues they just throw it in the trash...

Also the streaming service is nice. If you don't like it that's cool too.
Would very much like them to implement more community building features. Right now it seems like just a gimmick for store pages.

As with everything on Steam, I am patient for its evolution.

I told you via PM before but since you didn't respond I'm going to say it again.

It took me almost an hour before I realized you weren't BHC. You sound and talk exactly like I remember him sounding and talking, and he has streamed games before, and I even gifted him the game you were playing.
