steam difficulties

So I need to re download HL2. I have a steam account, but my cd key is not yet tied to it, hasnt been used on any account yet. Where in steam do I go to enter it and download the game? I go to 'play games' and under 'just released' there is HL2. I click on it, and this window comes up with purchse options. I click on 'refister a product i already own' and it tells me to put in my cd key. I put it in and press next and it tells me I have to have it installed, what do I do? I must be missing something.

As it says, you need to install it from your disk. If you bought the game from a shop, then you should have a cd. If you are re-installing hl2, then you must have tied it to your steam account previously. If you are doing a first install, you need the disk.

Perhaps you can explain how you have a key, but no CD?

Now, If i have it installed, shouldnt it not have to tell me I need to install it? What about people who purchase over steam and download it through steam, how is it they register there cd key without the game being installed from a disc? My brother (who lives in another state) emailed me the cd key, and I know it is legit and has never been used, and his from his copy of the retail version of the game, which he never used.

So, what if it already is installed from disk? not necasarily disk, but HL2 is installed from a disc mount. Shouldnt it accept it since its installed and the cd key is legit?

Deamon tools...yes. piracy....not exactly. Yeah so I have a downloaded version of the game, but how different is that from someone downloading the game from steam after paying for it. Afterall, someone DID pay for this cd key, my brother, I just dont have access to the install cd's, and cant download with steam. So before you accuse me, I never really did anything wrong, valve is still getting there money....

I'm confused...why would your brother email the cd key but forget the discs, he MUST know you'll need both, otherwise valve would just sell cd keys. Downloading the game from the net is dodgy cos that counts as fueling the warez scene and also that version of HL2 is months old and incompatable with steam. You NEED the discs and a legitamite cd key. This story seems too fabricated for me, and i'm not having any of it. If you have a legal version use it, why download an illegal version. AND have the cheek to come to a fan site to try and get help, coming to the very people who worship this company for their games. Please...spare us. Use your head next time and invest or 'download' some common decency.

Lets see, you downloaded it ILLEGALLY, not from STEAM or downloading it from a HL2 Disc, therefore it is VERY different. If you don't have HL2 content found in your steamapps folder STEAM downloads it for you. You=fraud.

uumm.. actually no disturbed...
you see if he is truely honest. (doubtful) but .. lets say he is..
hes fully entitled to use ANY version, method, media etc to install said hl2, with the CD *KEY* (hint hint)... its really the key that youre purchasing..
for instance:
after i bought and played through our beloved Half Life 2, my brother got a taste of it and was dying to own his own version, so he bought the box from target and went home only to find 5 discs to install, to which i only warned him further about actually downloading the updates and activating it etc... it was realistically a 3 hour evolution for me when i first installed it. he complained and thus my idea: copy the GFC files which hold the base content onto my brother's machine, over our network. it was instant, and more importantly EASIER. all he did was activate it with his cd key.. walla. an already updated installed version of HL2.. all it did was automatically detect a few missing small sized files and downloaded them appropriately.

so the only real BAD thing this guy did was ..well.. help out the warez community.. by either reputation, popularity, or actually supporting it if he has it shared.

Finally someone with some decency other than "you support piracy, get out". That was my point, epsilon just made it more clear. My brother emailed me the cd key, actually told me over aim, by just sending text, you cant send 4 gigs over aim. It was our idea that I just download the game off the net and use the cd key that he PAYED for. Afterall, its the same thing as whats on the cds he bought, isnt it? And would not only be faster, but wouldnt make him go to the post office and pay a couple bucks to send it in the mail. As for it not being the right version, cant I just apply the patches?

no i completely completely agree.. hes NOT legit.. i think we all can pretty much assume that one at this point.. he was trying to be cute and ask questions to something which he knows nothing about.. stupidily hoping we wouldnt catch onto the fact that he nor anyone else actually purchased the product. i wonder how far he could go though even with an illegal oudated version and a keygen'ned key?? considering valvE just banned how many thousand accounts for illegally obtaining copies??

but i was just saying that the method of getting hl2 on your HD doesnt matter as long as you got the key u paid for. PAID being the operative word.
its interesting that steam's feature of automatically replacing missing files, (while albiet very ****en convenient) almost encourages piracy to some degree. i mean he doesnt need much to actually obtain hl2, sad enough.

well lets hope valve keeps up the good work at least (this time around) with security and legit users by consistently banning/eliminating their accounts.

No you cant apply for the updates, the downloaded version is COMPLETELY different to the steam one. Install the discs, get him to send the discs, how much does mail cost in the states?

alright for all you wanks who say im using a keygen your wrong. That wouldnt be a legit cd key, and I know it wouldnt work for online play, which is all I want to do is play CS:S. I do have a legit cd key, I stole it and now its mine and theres no way anyone else can ever have it. but dont worry, give it some time, and I will figure out how to use it to my advantage, and be able to play yalls precious little game without paying for it, like I do every other game.
