I was just at Steampowered News when I noticed there was an update. So I started up Steam, but it didn't update anything. So I left it and browsed these forums for a bit. I come back to the Steam News and I notice that the news item HAS DISAPPEARED!!!

It had only a couple of changes:
- Removal of the Exit/Logout option
- Improved authentification
and 3 more steam related improvements.

I think you were hallucinating.

If not, maybe they accidently got ahead of themselves. :)

I saw it too but the news was for a platform update and when I restart steam it didn't work...and now the news isn't here.
Strange...

Improved authentification: seems like a good strategery on Valve's part!

All joking aside, this line is from their rss feed:
Valve RSS News Feed said:

Is that evidence of said anomaly, or do they just "publish" it every so often, update or no update?

One of the CS updates was posted, but then disappeared. The update came out a bit later and the news item appeared again.

Maybe valve is having some difficulties getting them onto the steam servers?

Anyone going to email Gabe?

Or maybe it happens with every update.

Please don't e-mail Gabe. It's not important.

Theyre going to remove the exit and logout option? :O I use it all the time! If I dont, my brother gets on the computer and screws up my settings and account. I hope to whatever deity you believe in that "remove" was a typo. Or that Valve changes their mind, which it looks like they did.

For those of us that are yet to use steam, what would that change? Unable to turn it off or something?

Valve has confirmed the mystery on the Steam forums.
Waldo: It's been postponed until (probably) tomorrow. One of those things where it's better to wait a bit and do it right rather than too early and get something wrong things.

I think removing the Exit/Logout button is a security thing. If you are permanently in your account, you cannot share the game.

Same here restarted and nothing. Maybe just a mistake.

that's retarded! if I can't log out what do I do when I get a new computer?

Turn off your old computer, thus the server would automatically log you out after a period of time.

Nothing to get that alarmed over, but I think there are concerns with other people messing up your settings and such. But anyway, if worst comes to worst it should still be possible to CTRL-ALT-DELETE it and end the process.

It doesn't matter, you will still be able to log in at other places, it just asks you for you password again.

i got that update message as well.......
thankfully i don't play any games on steam currently, and nobody else uses my pc.
personally, i think that any move that ends piracy is a good thing. ever wonder why $50 games jump in price? piracy...

The news was posted before it was supposed to be, due to some changes in our web software.

wait a second, so how can i log out of my account that has cs, hl, etc, and into my account that has cs:s?
thats lame.
the one with cs:s is my friends account but he doesnt have the internet at the moment, so im using his account. thats legit, so why are you trying to screw me over.

Can we just wait and see what the actual update is. For all we know "Removal of Exit/Log out" button could mean that when you exit it says "Would you like ot log out as well"?

Good call, let's not rush to conclusions and start panicking about the future functionality of Steam.

log out and exit should just be two separate options. easy solution.

At least it was this news post and not something along the lines of "Half-Life 2 has gone gold".

Why are people asuming always. They never said you wont be able to log out. It will just probably be just one key to exit. Which will log you out of steam but also if steam goes offline you will always be able to just sign back in and play sp/lan games. Dont jump to conclusions just wait and see.

OMG FFS, noone needs to have a 'exit' option and directly in top of it a 'exit and logout' option. I think they just moved it somewhere else, so stop whinning. TY

Yeah it's probably to stop people for abusing the offline mode.

A similar exploit were used for the CS: S leak but it was (to my knowledge never fixed) although they did get the information they needed from boomtown and me.
