Steam Rewards Pirates!!

I used Steam since the very start, of course it was a little buggy at the beginning, but since more than a year i didn't had any bug with it and i have 3 accounts on 3 very different PC.
It was the first time yesterday that i could not connect on two PC.
Once you have a stable system, no spyware running, that you have set up your firewall, router... correctly Steam will run fine.

Not always. There's still the odd glitch in the system- it's naive to think that every problem with Steam is down to user error.

When an update is downloading very slow or not at all but recovers a little later, does it mean that the spyware throttling my machine has left of its own accord? No, it means the server issues have been resolved.

If everything wrong with Steam was down to you and I, Valve wouldn't bother issuing the frequent bug-fixing updates. Steam does have some mild problems that crop up with new additions, there's no denying it.

I can't stand people who continually whine about the program, but equally I hate the growing elitist movement convinced that Steam itself is without any flaws.

I don't play PC games very much, and to be honest I find them a bit of a pain to begin with. For more casual gamers like me, getting a PC to run games can take a lot of effort. You have to worry about drivers, compatibility, spyware, installation, configuration, tweaking, patches, verification, and so on and so forth. This may seem like second nature to some PC gamers but for other people it takes up more time and effort than they are willing to spend.

Steam is just another thing to add to the list of potential problems. I personally haven't had any, and I'm sure most people don't. But just because I haven't, it doesn't mean that other people haven't. And they deserve to play the game just as much as I do, because at the end of the day they paid the same amount for the game as I did.

Most people would view Half Life 2 as an entertainment product to be enjoyed in the privacy of your own home. For singleplayer HL2 not to work because of a problem with Valve's servers would be very frustrating, I imagine. They bought the game, they just want to play singleplayer, by themselves, they want it to work at THEIR convenience (because they have other interests and obligations that take up their time) - just like almost every other singleplayer game available for the PC. But they can't.

To me, it's like a new standard of DVD players where the machine 'phones home' to verify that the DVD is actually genuine. A machine like that might reduce piracy, but the average DVD enthusiast wouldn't be very happy if they couldn't watch the film they got for Christmas because the server's down, even if it did only happen once...

You guys keep telling me to stop complaining, Steam is up 99% of the time, blah blah blah. I've also been told I wouldn't even be playing this game without Steam. Well au contrau, I actually bought this game at a software store in the mall. I don't care if its up 99% of the time.. its that 1% thats annoying. BTW have you ever tried using the friends list on CSS or HLDM? I don't know about you guys, but I haven't had it work once. I don't hate Steam cuz its "the cool thing to do". I hate it because it makes things unnecessarily complicated and difficult.

Valve you sir are the devil and i hate you and will never buy another 1 of your products because steam goes down all the time! Infact the last time it went down was about a year ago for about 2 hours AND THAT IN UNACEPTABLE!!!!!

After you're done playing the single-player, you're NOT going to play it very much more after you've beaten it.

If you were playing online I can see how you'd care, but since you're bitching about being able to play the 1-player version, I don't get it.

I've beaten the single player game, twice.
I don't need to play it anymore. I know what happens.

I live in WA, and the Valve corporation is in Bellevue, about 2 hrs north of me, so I'm guessing the game servers are that close. My Broadband connection has always worked perfectly fine and connects to Steam with no problems whatsoever.

If your game isn't working, go figure out something else to do, and stop whining in the forums. It will work by the next day.

I haven't gotten it to work either. I have, however, worked for hours just to get to play with a real friend of mine. Would be much easier if we could add each other to our friends list. But of course we can't.

WTF?! I can't count how many times I've beaten this game, and it is still immensely fun... been playing it nonstop since release date and I've never even played multiplayer. Am I the only one who will play this game's single player levels more than twice? This is, in fact, the best litmus test for a good game, how often you come back to play it after you have completed it. Quake II is the oldest game that I own that I still go back and play over, and Half Life II will also enjoy that attention. As far as Steam being down, it was frustrating when it took six hours to install, but once I discovered offline mode, I never looked back.

I think steam is something great... beyond what alot of people see of it now.
By doing this with HL2, you might loose some customers but at the same time your making more *True* Gamers. You are making them get up and go on websites for help. You are making them come to places like this in which they get addicted to and stay and become a very loyal HL fan, rather than just picking up the game and playing it then passing it on and do the same to another.

You are constructing a fanbase in a "new" way.
